The Booyzen Archive

…What was searched → Why this archive exists In 1915 a man at Barkly East filled in his own mother's death notice. Where it asked for her parents' names, he wrote: "Father: Kolbe, thinks James was christian name . Mother: Unknown ." His grandfather was George Augustus Kolbe — who married at sixteen on a sworn lie in Shoreditch, sailed on the Nautilus in 1819 as an 1820 Settler , preached across the Orange River, and named a Karoo farm after the Württemberg his own father had left. His grandmother was Margaret Downing of London.…

The Barrys

…The 1820 Settler hypothesis does not survive arithmetic. He was born 8 June 1819 . The settler fleets sailed from late 1819 and reached Algoa Bay from April 1820. He cannot have been born on that voyage. But the family does have a documented 1820 Settler — his own father-in-law, George Augustus Kolbe , who sailed on the Nautilus from Gravesend on 3 December 1819. Inferred The likeliest reading is that a true settler story attached itself to the wrong branch.…

…The woman wears a bustle and cuirass bodice; the man a full beard and watch chain — costume of about 1875–1885. Fatal George Kolbe died in 1844 and Margaret Downing in 1867. Neither can be in a photograph taken in the late 1870s. Probably their son George Augustus Kolbe (b. 1836) and his wife — the repeated forename is the obvious route by which the caption went astray. → Kathleen Mary Barry (Booysen) Listed in the tree as a sister of Catherine Maria Sophia “Kathleen” Barry, also married to a Booysen, with no dates. Resolved RESOLVED by John Barry's 1915 death notice, which lists only ONE Barry daughter married to a Boyson.…

…George Augustus Kolbe, 1802–1844 — an 1820 Settler The family's research notes wonder whether John Augustus Barry was born at sea with the 1820 Settlers. He was not. But the family does have a documented settler, on the other side of that marriage, and his record is unusually complete.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
