…Johanna Catharina was eight — her own 1863 death notice puts her birth at 30 April 1819. Jacoba was seven, George four, James one. And Thomas Jacobus , born 1818, is not on the list — which independently supports the correction that he died in 1827 rather than in infancy in 1818. A correction the tree needs Our tree records James Mountjoy as born and died in 1826 . He is listed here alive, as a minor , at his father's death in September 1827. The infant-death date is wrong. Where the line now ends, and why it is a real end. James Montjoy, a saddler born in "Europe" about 1782, who owned a house and erf at Cradock worth £90 and died there in September 1827 leaving four children under nine.…

A petition in her own voice.…

The death notice → Four corrections it offers our own tree: Anna Catharina is recorded there as Slier , not Schleher; her marriage to James Mountjoy is dated 9 March 1817 at Graaff-Reinet ; Thomas Jacobus lived to 1827 , not 1818; and there is a sibling our tree lacks entirely — Jacoba Catharina Mountjoy (1820–1842) . Johanna Margaritha Pretorius — the woman four documents refused to name She was the hardest person in this archive to find, and the reason is worth as much as the answer.
