More than one person of this name. This archive holds 2 people called Willem Hermanus Pieterzen, and they are gathered here together because merging them silently would be worse than saying so. The surrounding text on each page below usually makes it clear which is which.
  • Willem Hermanus Pieterzen — — to bef. 1817. Anna Catharina Slier's FIRST husband, and the origin of the name Willem Hermanus in this family — which therefore comes from a step-relation with no blood tie to the Booyzens. Three documents name him differently; the 1851 godfather, his son, carries both forms in full.
  • Willem Hermanus Pieterzen — — to —. Godfather at the 1851 font and the boy's namesake — Johanna Catharina's half-brother by her mother's first marriage. His surname, spelled with a z by the same clerk, is what emptied this archive's name argument.

…So of the three figures the archive had, the marriage register is the outlier : it gives his age as 22 in December 1879, when he was 28 . His 1905 death registration says 55 , which is right within a year. The 1879 entry is wrong by six years. And he was named for his godfather The witnesses are Willem Hermanus Pieterzen , Maria Catharina Magdalena Potgieter and Xaverius Hermanus Pieterzen . (The archive scan corrects this archive's earlier reading of the surname as Pietersen — see below; the first given name, earlier read as Iwerus , is still not certain.) Johanna Catharina Mountjoy's half-brothers were Pieterzens — the sons of Anna Catharina Sleer by her first marriage.…

Cape marriage entries of this date routinely record where a party came from, and this very page does it repeatedly — three couples in the right-hand column are entered "beide van Uitenhage" . Against James Montjoy's name there is a long ruled dash and nothing else .…

The archive had only inferred the Pieterzen marriage, from a godparent standing at an 1851 font. Here it is named, in a document eleven years older. She married a Pieterzen first — four sons between 1808 and 1813 — and then James Mountjoy , who died in 1827 leaving her with a son, Willem Jan , born and dead in 1828. A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
