What the registers say

• birth — 27 Apr 1819 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“THE EARLIEST ACT THIS ARCHIVE HAS FOR THIS HOUSEHOLD, AND IT CARRIES HER FATHER'S SIGNATURE. Baptised at Sant'Andrea 29 April 1819.

THE DATE IS PROVED BY THE REGISTER'S ORDER AND NEEDS NO HANDWRITING. Act 51 is 22 April and act 53 is 1 May; act 52 falls between them, and the day word reads ventisette.

HER FATHER SIGNED HIS OWN NAME. «…ed indi firmato da noi, e dal dichiarante, avendo i testimonj asserito di non sapere scrivere» — and at the foot, in large block capitals, «A ALFONSO DIGLIO». Both witnesses could not write and he could. This archive holds one other autograph from these streets, Pasquale Falco's of 1814.

Witnesses ANDREA MARTONE, thirty-seven, falegname, of strada SANT'ANDREA, and DOMENICO LAUDATO, fifty-two, contadino, of strada SANT'ANDREA.

She pushes this household back three years. It was known from 1822 onwards, with a marriage index entry of 19 November 1813 and nothing between. Found by reading the 1819 birth register for work-list row 86 — a volume that had never been read.”
