- death — 26 Sep 1828 , Arienzo “PROBABLE. «Antonia Carfora, 76, contadina, fu STEFANO CARFORA, contadino, e fu TERESA DI GUIDA, moglie di DOMENICO GIGLIO» — act 46, read from the image in the Arienzo death register for 1828 on 8 September 2026, eleven days before the act that names her mother's own death was found.
The two acts were read a year apart and neither was found by looking for the other. This archive held the 1828 act for two weeks without a household, because a woman named only as a dead parent gives nothing to search on.
WHY THIS IS PROBABLE AND NOT PROVEN. The couple named is the same — Stefano Carfora and Teresa di Guida — and the ages agree without being made to: Antonia is seventy-six in September 1828, so born about 1752; Teresa is eighty-six in March 1810, so born about 1724, which makes her twenty-eight when Antonia was born. Both parents are «fu» in 1828 and Teresa was already a widow in 1810.
What would break it: a second Stefano Carfora married to a second Teresa di Guida. Stefano Carfora is a recurring Arienzo name — a Stefano Carfora di Pietro, born about 1796, appears as a declarant in the death registers of 1816, 1822, 1823, 1825, 1827 and 1828, and he too had a daughter called Antonia Carfora, who died at eight months in 1823. He is a generation younger and is not this man; but he is the reason this is not called certain. It is the pairing of both names that carries the identification, not either name alone.”ANTENATI an_ua14330 img31L act46 — READ FROM THE IMAGE
