What the registers say
HE DIED AWAY FROM HOME, AND THAT IS WHY THIS ACT EXISTS. The Comune of Nola drew it (its act 179 of 1825, on 5 November) and sent a certified copy to Arienzo, which copied it whole into the «Diversi» register — the volume for births at sea, recognitions, adoptions, people who died outside their own domicile, and stillbirths. A SERIES THIS ARCHIVE HAD NEVER OPENED, found on 17 September 2026 while hunting for something else. Fifty-three in November 1825, so born about 1772. Declared at Nola by two of his own brothers, DOMENICO CRISCI, colono, and GABRIELE CRISCI, both living at Arienzo.”ANTENATI an_ua14071 (Arienzo, Diversi 1825) atto 1, img 2r — READ FROM THE IMAGE
- the list is of MINORS, and that matters elsewhere — 4 Nov 1825 , Arienzo “READ THE ARITHMETIC OF THIS ACT BEFORE USING IT. It names four surviving children, aged fifteen, twelve, ten and five, and it makes their father fifty-three. A man of fifty-three whose eldest living child is fifteen either married at thirty-eight or has older children who are not on this list — and these acts list the children who need a tutor, which is to say the minors. So this is not a complete list of his children and must not be read as one.
IT BEARS ON ALESSANDRA CRISCI. She married MATTEO FALCO on 24 January 1834, and the marriage index gives her parents as «CRISCI [forename lost to the fold shadow], [QUO]TOLO ANGELA». This archive filed that as a resemblance and not a fact, because Angela Quotolo is not a rare name here and the father's forename cannot be read — and that still stands. What this act removes is the obvious objection to it: that Alessandra is not among his children. She would not be, if she was already grown. A resemblance with a hole in it is now a resemblance without one, and it is still not a fact.”ANTENATI an_ua14071 (Arienzo, Diversi 1825) atto 1, img 2r — READ FROM THE IMAGE
