  “«è comparso DOMENICO COSSI, di anni QUARANTACINQUE, di professione CONTADINO, domiciliato in detto comune, strada COSSI» — b. c.1773. The surname and the street both read COSSI here and both were magnified. In 1821 the same man — same wife, same age series — is Domenico COSPI of strada COSPI, and an 1819 marriage index makes his son a CRISCI. Three spellings, three documents, one household; this archive records the variance and does not resolve it.
  
  A CAUTION ON THAT READING, AND IT IS THE SAME CLERK. Four leaves later, in act 47 of this volume, the same hand writes generation three's wife — ANDREANA CRISCI, verified word for word from the image on 20 September 2026 and given as CRISCI in eight other acts. At 3,000 pixels that word is a flourished C, a narrow letter that will not resolve, a doubled long ſſ and a final i — indistinguishable, at this resolution, from the Coſſi read here. So this clerk's C-word is not a safe discriminator, and the reading above is recorded as a reading, not as a correction. The archive's own name for this household is unchanged.”
