What the registers say

  • named — dead by 1840 , Arienzo
“«e di Donna FAUSTINA CIMMINO Defunta, domiciliata ivi» — read from the image at full resolution on 20 September 2026, the capital F with its crossbar and the «au» that follows it.

THE DISCREPANCY THIS ARCHIVE PUBLISHED DOES NOT EXIST. This page said: «THE ONE DISCREPANCY, AND IT IS PUBLISHED RATHER THAN RESOLVED. The 1840 act names the mother SERAFINA Cimmino; the 1842 act names her FAUSTINA Cimmino… Either a clerk misread a forename, or Stefano Scarpati married twice.» Both acts say FAUSTINA. There was no second wife to wonder about and no clerk to blame: the misreading was this archive's, and a woman called Donna Serafina Cimmino, who never existed, had a name on this site.

What it costs and what it buys. It removes an invented person and an invented problem, and it strengthens the join: the archpriest of Arienzo and the sorora of the Conservatorio di San Filippo are now named in two acts two years apart with the same father, the same rank, the same trade and the same mother. Still an inference — two death acts are not a birth record — but no longer one with an objection standing against it.”
