What the registers say
- birth — 18 Jan 1818 , Arienzo, strada Cossi “THE EARLIEST ACT THIS HOUSEHOLD HAS, AND IT SPELLS THE FATHER A THIRD WAY. Witnesses CESARE DIGLIO, contadino of strada CAMELLARA, and FRANCESCO COSSI, fifty-two, calzolajo.
SHE IS NEW, AND SHE IS THIS HOUSEHOLD'S THIRD DOCUMENT. It had two: a son ANGELO CRISCI marrying in 1819, and a daughter ANNA MARIA TERESA COSPI born in 1821.
AND THAT IS THREE SURNAMES FOR ONE HOUSEHOLD IN THREE ACTS — CRISCI, COSPI, COSSI. This archive renamed the household from Domenico Crisci to Domenico Cospi on the strength of the 1821 act, where the declarant is «Domenico Cospi» of «strada Cospi», the leaf's margin is annotated «Cospi» and the parish notice names the child «Anna Maria Teresa Cospi». This act, three years earlier, says COSSI and strada COSSI, and the word was magnified: a capital C running straight to an o, a doubled long ſſ, a final i — five letters, no p, and no i between the C and the o.
NOTHING IS RENAMED ON THIS ACCOUNT. The household keeps the name the 1821 act gave it, and the question is published rather than answered. What is not in doubt is the mother: MARGARITA FALCO, forty in January 1818 and forty-one in August 1821 — three and a half years apart and one year older, which for this office is the same woman.
The volume holds the year twice — a printed slip at image 17 declares the 1817 register stock «vale pel corrente Esercizio 1818» — so this act appears at image 5 right and again at image 23 right, in two hands. Both were read and both say COSSI.
A CAUTION ON THAT READING, AND IT IS THE SAME CLERK. Four leaves later, in act 47 of this volume, the same hand writes generation three's wife — ANDREANA CRISCI, verified word for word from the image on 20 September 2026 and given as CRISCI in eight other acts. At 3,000 pixels that word is a flourished C, a narrow letter that will not resolve, a doubled long ſſ and a final i — indistinguishable, at this resolution, from the Coſſi read here. So this clerk's C-word is not a safe discriminator, and the reading above is recorded as a reading, not as a correction. The archive's own name for this household is unchanged.”ANTENATI an_ua14415 (Arienzo, Nati 1818) atto 9, foglio 5, img 5r (and its duplicate at img 23r) — READ FROM THE IMAGE
