What the registers say

  • marriage — Dec 1828 , Arienzo
“AN UNATTACHED FALCO HOUSEHOLD, JOINED TO GENERATION FOUR. «10. FALCO MICHELANGELO | Arienzo | FALCO PASQUALE, e RIVETTI CHIARA» ed «VIGLIOTTI ANTONIA | Arienzo | VIGLIOTTI FRANCESCO, e REPETELLI VITTORIA | Xbre 1828» — the DAY is hidden behind the fold shadow in this filming, the month is unmistakable. This archive has carried «Michelangelo Falco (strada Camellara)» and «Michelangelo Falco & Mariantonia Vigliotta» as households with NO PARENTS FOR HIM. He is Pasquale Falco's son, and therefore VINCENZO FALCO'S BROTHER — which is why Vincenzo, 38, declared their daughter Anna's death on 4 May 1831 «come PARENTE della defunta». A relationship word the archive recorded in 1831 and could not explain until now”

  • baptism — 25 Sep 1808 , Arienzo
“THE BAPTISM WORK-LIST ROW 87 TURNS ON, AND IT IS NO LONGER A MACHINE TRANSCRIPTION. «Anno Dni 1808, die vero 25 Septembris, R[everen]dus D. JOSEPH RIVETTA de nostri licentia baptizavit infantem natum ex PASCHALE FALCO, et CLARA RIVETTA conjugibus hujus Parochiae, cui dedit nomen MICHAEL ANGELUS ANTONIUS. Matrina fuit FORTUNATA VILLANO.»

A CHILD CHRISTENED «MICHAEL ANGELUS ANTONIUS» CAN BE CALLED MICHELE BY ONE CLERK AND MICHELANGELO BY ANOTHER FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE — which is the argument row 87 has been resting on a machine transcription to make. It now rests on the image. His own marriage act of 1828 names PASQUALE FALCO and CHIARA RIVETTI, and so does this.

NOTHING IS MERGED. The 1850 act calling a Michele Falco «figlio del fu RAFFAELE» still stands beside it, and this archive does not merge people on a name. What has changed is that the evidence against that act is now read rather than transcribed.

A RIVETTA PRIEST FOR A RIVETTI MOTHER, «de nostri licentia» — by the archpriest's leave — and the mother is written CLARA RIVETTA, the spelling this archive already holds as a variant of Chiara Rivetti.”
