What the registers say

  • death — 5 Mar 1810 , Arienzo, strada Porta di Sopra
“A DI GUIDA MARRIED TO A CARFORA, AND SHE WAS BORN ABOUT 1724. Found on 22 September 2026 in the Arienzo death register for 1810 — one of the seven volumes of that decade this archive had never opened — while looking for somebody else entirely.

«NUM. 15.

Eighty-six in March 1810 puts her birth about 1724 — the earliest di Guida this archive can name, by three generations — and she died a beggar.

SHE JOINS TWO OF THIS ARCHIVE'S SURNAMES A CENTURY BEFORE THEY MEET AGAIN. A di Guida married a Carfora; four generations later Antonia di Guida married Giuseppe Falco, and Maria Antonia Carfora married into the Annecchino. No kinship between these households is claimed — di Guida and Carfora are both Arienzo surnames and this archive has learnt what a shared name is worth.”

  • named as dead — 26 Sep 1828 , Arienzo
“«fu TERESA DI GUIDA» — the second of the two acts that hold this household, and the one found first. It gives her a daughter; it does not give her a date. The date came eighteen years earlier in the register, and a year later in this archive.

Her trade differs between the two acts — contadino is attached to her husband here, and in 1810 she herself is a mendica, a beggar. These do not contradict each other: she had been a widow for an unknown number of years by 1810 and died on alms.”
