What the registers say

  • death — 6 Sep 1813 , Arienzo, Convento dei Cappuccini
“A CARFORA WHO DIED A CAPUCHIN, AND THE REGISTER GIVES BOTH HIS NAMES.

«Nel secolo chiamato» — «called, in the world». A friar took a religious name and a place instead of a surname, and without this formula he would be unfindable: there is no Carfora in the 1813 index under Angelo d'Arienzo. The declarants are the convent's own household.

This archive already holds a Falco who took orders — Don Giovanni Falco, deacon — and a gentry Falco house with a nun in it. Fra Angelo is not connected to either; he is recorded because a Carfora in a convent is a Carfora who leaves no descendants and must not be looked for among them. [[don-giovanni-falco-deacon]]”
