Josefa in Gilberto's 1895 household (b. c.1852)

ALMOST CERTAINLY THE JOSEFA LERENA WHO STOOD GODMOTHER TO GILBERTO'S SON RAUL at the Catedral de Montevideo on 10 September 1885 - a woman this archive met and could not place. The 1895 census finds her in Gilberto's own Buenos Aires household: "Lerena de L. Josefa, m, 43, VIUDA, R. Oriental". Born about 1852, so of his generation. THE FORM OF HER NAME IS 'LERENA DE L.' On the two lines above her the enumerator writes married women as [maiden surname] de L. - Lenguas de Lerena, Salvanach de Lerena. If he is consistent, SHE WAS BORN A LERENA AND MARRIED A LERENA. That is the exact pattern behind this archive's standing question - whether Maria Lerena, named on Pablo Armando's enrolment card, was a Lerena by birth. Stated as a reading of an abbreviation in an enumerator's hand, not as a fact: her own marriage record would settle it and has not been looked for. CORRECTED WITHIN THE HOUR: THE 'DE LERENA' READING IS WITHDRAWN AS EVIDENCE. Uruguayan civil registration carries a JOSEFA LERENA married to FERNANDO MORATORIO, and FamilySearch's tree attaches her to Josefa Lerena Traibel 1851-1947 - the same candidate. If that is this woman, "de L." is the enumerator's shorthand for the LERENA HOUSEHOLD rather than her husband's surname, and this entry says nothing about a Lerena-Lerena marriage. The letter was read right; the inference was not. See data/josefa-lerena-candidates.tsv. AND THE WITHDRAWAL IS NOW ON A DOCUMENT RATHER THAN A TREE. The 1880 baptisms of Josefa Lerena's daughters name her husband Fernando Moratorio and her parents Avelino and Ambrosia Traibel. If this census woman is that Josefa - she is 43 here against a birth of 1851, and a VIUDA where a later record calls Fernando Moratorio "fallecido" - then "de L." is the enumerator's shorthand for the LERENA HOUSEHOLD and nothing more.
