Only in 1840, the oldest of the three, are both gone together. His mother was Anna Maria van der Merwe . She had died before March 1825, when her son was twelve. By the time he died at seventy-two, nobody in the house could name her. That resolves the oldest “Serious” contradiction on the disputed page — Anna Maria van der Merwe died before March 1825 and this son was born about June 1828 — and it was never a contradiction, only a missing row: two van der Merwe wives, one after the other. It also repairs the warning printed on the 1876 household, which had to draw eight children under one marriage because no other was recorded.
