Jan Gerthardus Lodewikus Booijsen

Fifth on his father’s 1876 notice, and named for the man at the top of the line. HIS is the estate TAB MHG O/2899, which this archive had spent months attributing to his nephew of the same name born in 1855 — the Transvaal probate index gives him as the deceased, aged 67, born district Graaff-Reinet, died 25 May 1885 at Vaalbank in the district of Lichtenburg. His daughter Magdalena Susanna Maria died on the same farm in 1920, and her death notice names him. He is how this family reaches the western Transvaal.

The 1876 notice lists eight children and names no mother for any of them. They are drawn under this marriage because it is the only one recorded — not because the document says so.

…The date had no source except the file number. The Transvaal probate index names the estate's deceased in full: Jan Gerardus Lodewicus Booijzen, aged 67, born district Graaff-Reinet, died 25 May 1885 at Vaalbank, district Lichtenburg — born about 1818, which is his UNCLE, fifth on the 1876 Sterfkennis. The nephew's death date is withdrawn and nothing is known about what became of him. The particular error is worth naming: the archive read a year off a reference number, wrote it in as a fact, and then cited the fact back.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
