  “«nata da MARIA MORGILLO sua moglie legittima, di anni VENTITRE» — and this answers a question the work list raised. The archive holds her as ANGELA MARIA MORGILLO, twenty-three at her marriage in February 1845; the birth register calls her plainly MARIA MORGILLO, the same age. So the family tree's unsourced «Crescenzo Falco × Maria Concetta Morgillo» is most likely this woman under a third form of her name, not a second wife — though that is an inference, and the tree's «son Giovanni» is still unattested.”

Three readings inside a year of each other. She is «ANGELA MARIA MORGILLO» in her marriage act and plain «MARIA MORGILLO» in every birth and death act of her children.”

  The dossier's copy says twenty-two; the register's own act 3 says twenty-three. Her birth act of 2 August 1822 says the copy is right. An orphan of both parents at twenty-two, which is why the dossier had to carry both their death acts and why row 73 could be answered at all.”

  “Twenty-three, contadina, born in Arienzo, and an orphan of both parents when she married CRESCENZO FALCO. The church act carries a dispensation «super quarto gradu consanguinitatis», so she and her husband were third cousins — the fourth Falco marriage inside the fourth degree this archive holds.”

  “HER BIRTH ACT, FOUND AND READ — AND IT MAKES HER A YEAR YOUNGER THAN HER OWN MARRIAGE DOES. The 1845 dossier carries a certified copy of it as document 2; the register was then opened at the act it names, because a copy is not a record.
  
  Arienzo, Nati 1822, act 66, images 68 right and 69 left: «L'Anno mille ottocento ventidue, il dì due del mese di Agosto, ad ore ventuno, avanti di Noi VINCENZO MORGILLO Sindaco ed Ufiziale dello Stato Civile del Comune di Corpo d'Arienzo, Distretto di Nola … è comparso GENNARO MORGILLO, di anni trentasei, di professione MASSARO DI CAMPAGNA, domiciliato in questo Comune, strada VALLONE, quale ci ha presentato una femina … che la stessa è nata da MARIA FELICE SAN=/SONE sua moglie legittima, di anni trentaquattro … nel giorno due del mese di Agosto anno corrente, alle ore diciassette, nella sua propria di abitazione». The indicazione: baptised at Sant'Andrea Apostolo the same day, «il Sacramento del Battesimo è stato amministrato ad ANGELA MARIA MORGILLO».
  
  SHE WAS TWENTY-TWO WHEN SHE MARRIED, NOT TWENTY-THREE. Born 2 August 1822, she was twenty-two and six months on 2 February 1845. The certified copy of the promise in the dossier says «di anni VENTIDUE» and the register's own act 3 says «VENTITRE». The birth act decides between them, and it decides for the copy. Nothing turns on the year; it is recorded because this archive has twice found a clerk's age to be a guess and here it can watch one being made.
  
  Her father is a MASSARO DI CAMPAGNA here and a COLONO in 1843 and 1845 — a man who kept a farm and ended a labourer on it, or two words for the same work. The street changes too: strada Vallone in 1822, strada Cappuccini by 1845.”
