What the registers say

  • death — 3 Jan 1811 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“A FALCO OF STRADA CAMELLARA BORN ABOUT 1747, AND THE PARENTS HE IS GIVEN ARE A GENERATION THIS ARCHIVE DOES NOT HAVE.

«li quali hanno sottoscritta la dichiarazione della morte seguita il dì terza — 3 del mese di Gennaro dell'anno Mille ottocento, ed undici in persona del Signor ANGELO FALCO, di anni SESSANTAQUATTRO, di professione BRACCIALE, nato in Arienzo, domiciliato in questa stessa Comune, e strada CAMELLARA, figlio dalli furono GIUSEPPE FALCO, e ROSA SPOSITO».

«FURONO» — PLURAL. Both his parents were already dead on 3 January 1811.

THE FATHER'S NAME WAS SETTLED BY A CONTROL LETTER. «Giuseppe» and «Giuseppa» end in the same cramped glyph in this hand. The word was set beside «Giuseppe Verdicchio» — a man, certain, written by the same clerk six images earlier in the same volume — and the terminal letters match. [[surname-ligature-test]]

HOW THIS WAS FOUND, AND WHY IT WAS NOT FOUND SOONER. This archive read the 1811 death register on 21 September 2026 and published it as read in full. It was not. The volume puts two acts on every image — even numbers on the left page, odd on the right — and only the right pages were swept. Angelo Falco is act 2. He sat in the half that was never opened, in a volume this archive had already called finished. [[the-tavola-page-break]]

WHAT IS NOT CLAIMED. Sixty-four in January 1811 puts his birth about 1747, which is the generation of Matteo Falco, this archive's head of line, who died in 1802 — and he lived on strada Camellara, where Matteo's people lived. That is a reason to look, not a reason to join them. Nothing in this act names Matteo, and a shared street and a shared surname have twice in this archive turned out to mean nothing. [[two-falco-families-arienzo]]

He is given no wife and no children. In this register a married man is given «marito di» and his survivors are counted; Angelo Falco is given his parents instead. At sixty-four that is a statement that he left none.”
