What the registers say

  • birth — 16 Mar 1810 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“THE ACT THAT FINALLY SEPARATES THE TWO GIUSEPPE FALCO OF ARIENZO, AND IT DOES IT WITH ONE WORD.

«Oggi che sono li sedici — 16 del mese di Marzo … mille ottocento dieci … è comparso … il Signor GIUSEPPE FALCO DI FRANCESCO — di professione BRACCIALE — d'anni VENTISETTE — … abitante nella strada della CAMELLARA — Il medesimo ha presentata una bambina … nata in costanza del suo legitimo Matrimonio con GELSOMINA VIGLIOTTA sua Moglie — La quale è nata il giorno sedici del mese di Marzo, ad ore dieci».

«DI FRANCESCO» — AND THE OTHER GIUSEPPE FALCO IS «DEL FU MATTEO». Nine weeks earlier, in this same volume, «GIUSEPPE FALCO DEL FU MATTEO, massaro di campagna, d'anni vent'otto» declared a son on the same street.

TWO MEN OF ONE NAME, ONE YEAR APART IN AGE, ON ONE STREET, BOTH DECLARING CHILDREN IN THE SAME REGISTER. This archive has spent two days trying to tell them apart by trade — which fails, because both are called massaro di campagna by 1815 — and by street, which fails here. The patronymic is the only clean discriminator, and the wife's name is the other. [[which-falco]]

HIS FATHER IS «DI», NOT «DEL FU» — FRANCESCO FALCO WAS ALIVE IN MARCH 1810. This archive has published that a missing «fu» proves nothing about life; a present «di» against a «del fu» in the same clerk's hand nine weeks apart is a different thing. [[quondam-not-evidence]]

The child's given name falls below the band read and is not recorded here.”

This parish repeats its names relentlessly — there are three Maria Falco and four Pasquale. These are different people, kept apart on purpose rather than merged into one.
