What the registers say

  • birth — 5 Feb 1815 , Arienzo, strada Costa

A daughter born 5 February 1815 — the child's given name falls below the band that was read and is not recorded here.

THIS ACT DESTROYED THE ARGUMENT THAT SEPARATED THE TWO GIUSEPPE FALCO BY TRADE. In the 1813 birth register this man is a contadino of strada Costa; here, two years later, he is a massaro di campagna — which is exactly what the other Giuseppe Falco, of strada Camellara, is called in the same year. A trade in these registers is what a man said on the day.

Thirty-four in February 1815 puts his birth about 1781; the 1813 act made him thirty-three in January 1813, so about 1780. Those two agree, which is more than this archive can say for the other household.”

This parish repeats its names relentlessly — there are three Maria Falco and four Pasquale. These are different people, kept apart on purpose rather than merged into one.
