Francesco Carfora (of Matteo, m. 1828)
Recorded in the household of Sabatino Annecchino & Mariantonia Carfora.
This chart is empty, and that is a statement rather than an omission. This person is named inside somebody else's act — as a grandparent, in the «del fu» clause that gives a parent's own father. No household here holds them in their own right, and no act read so far names their spouse or their other children. The page exists because a record names them.
What the registers say
- named as living — 21 Jan 1860 , Arienzo “HIS NAME IS FRANCESCO, AND THIS ARCHIVE PUBLISHED IT AS VALERIO. The 1860 act writes the forename across a line break — «figlia di Fran-» at the end of one line, «cesco Carfora» at the start of the next — and this archive read the second half as «lerio», reasoned that no Italian forename ends in -lerio except one, and published «VALERIO CARFORA». The reasoning was sound and the reading was wrong.
THREE DOCUMENTS SETTLE IT, AND TWO OF THEM NEED NO HANDWRITING JUDGEMENT AT ALL.
One — his own consent, written out in full three weeks earlier. Item 6 of the marriage act's document list is the bride's father's consent, and the paper itself is in the 1860 Arienzo processetti: «L'anno milleottocentosessanta il giorno primo Gennajo in Arienzo. Same town, same official, same month, the name unwrapped and unhurried.
Two — his daughter's birth act, which names him twice. Arienzo, Nati 1830, act 142: «è comparso FRANCESCO CARFORA, di anni ventotto, di professione contadino, domiciliato in questo Comune, strada SIGNORINDICO», and again at the foot, «testimonj intervenuti al presente atto, e da esso Signor FRANCESCO CARFORA prodotti».
Three — his marriage, two years before that. Arienzo, Matrimoni 1828, act 11, 29 June 1828: FRANCESCO CARFORA, twenty-eight, contadino of strada Signorindico, son of the late Matteo Carfora and the late Grazia Zimbardo, marrying PASQUA MORGILLO.
WHAT SURVIVES OF THE OLD ENTRY. The part this archive got right is the part it argued hardest for: the act does not mark him dead, and item 6 proves he consented in person. Francesco Carfora, contadino of strada Signorindico, was alive at Arienzo on 21 January 1860 — a man to look for, not a death to look for. Only the forename changes.”ANTENATI an_ua14207 (Arienzo processetti 1860) bundle 3, imgs 25-42 + ANTENATI an_ua14427 img145r-146l act142 + ANTENATI an_ua14232 img12r act11
