What the registers say

  • named — dead by 1843 , Arienzo, strada Cioffi
“«figlio di GIOACCHINO CRISCI defunto, di professione contadino, domiciliato ivi» — named in both his sons' death acts, and dead before January 1829.

THE SURNAME WAS PUBLISHED HERE AS CIOFFI UNTIL 20 SEPTEMBER 2026. Both acts were magnified on that day and both read CRISCI: a capital C, a narrow r shoulder, a long ſ with its descender, then ci. No round o, which Cossi needs; no tall double-f ligature, which Cioffi needs. That is this archive's own three-way test, applied to the two documents this household rests on.

It matters beyond a letter. A Falco woman marrying a CRISCI joins the surname the direct line married twice — Matteo Falco to Francesca Crisci and Vincenzo Falco to Andreana Crisci. Nothing here joins her to either, and none is claimed; but the family she married into is not the one this archive had her in.”

  • named as dead — 1809 , Arienzo
“«figlio del fu GIOACCHINO» — dead by 1809. The act gives him no surname; it is taken from his son's. That is an inference, and it is the only one in this household.

WRITTEN AS A SECOND PERSON IN THIS HOUSE AND FOLDED BACK ON 23 SEPTEMBER 2026. This row carried a qualified form of the name — the kind this archive uses to tell two people of one name apart — on a FATHER, in a household that already named him plainly. A house has one father; two men of one name cannot both be it. The qualifier came in when two duplicate households were merged earlier the same day and their member lists were concatenated without folding the parents. It put him on nine of his own children's pages twice.”
