What the registers say

  • death — 13 May 1832 , Arienzo, strada Costa
“READ FROM THE IMAGE 21 SEPTEMBER 2026, AND IT JOINS TWO HOUSEHOLDS THIS ARCHIVE KEEPS APART. Act 32: «è morta nella sua propria casa GIOVANNA FALCO, D'ANNI SESSANTA, MOGLIE D'ANTONIO LETTIERI, nata in Arienzo, di professione contadina, domiciliata ivi, figlia di MICHELE FALCO Defunto … e di VINCENZA SPOSITO Defunta» — died 13 May 1832 at twenty-three hours. Declared by GENNARO COSPI, thirty, and CLEMENTE COSPI, twenty-eight, both contadini of strada COSTA, both «vicino della defunta».

Sixty in 1832 puts her birth about 1772. And «moglie d'ANTONIO LETTIERI» is the join: this archive also holds a household «Antonio Lettieri & Giovanna Falco», known from a marriage index of 1826 and a daughter Nunzia Lettieri who married in 1837. The death act says both things in one sentence. The two households are left standing and cross-referenced rather than merged, because that is a judgement this archive has not yet made.”

This parish repeats its names relentlessly — there are three Maria Falco and four Pasquale. These are different people, kept apart on purpose rather than merged into one.
