What the registers say

  • named as living — Jan 1812 , Arienzo, strada delli Crisci
“THE SECOND FALCO WOMAN THIS ARCHIVE HAS FOUND MARRIED TO A CRISCI, and she is alive and bearing children in 1809 and 1811, so born roughly 1780–1790.

THE OTHER IS FRANCESCA FALCO, who bore a son to a Gioacchino Crisci about 1765 — a generation older, and on the same street. Nothing joins them.

WHY TWO OF THEM MATTERS MORE THAN EITHER. Matteo Falco married Francesca Crisci; his son Vincenzo married Andreana Crisci. This archive has always taken those two marriages as a fact about one family. They are beginning to look like a fact about two streets — Falco of Camellara and Crisci of strada delli Crisci, marrying each other repeatedly across at least fifty years. That is a pattern, not a pedigree, and no act yet joins any of these women to this line.”
