What the registers say

  • named as living — 1809 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“A CARFORA HOUSEHOLD ON STRADA CAMELLARA — THE FALCO STREET — IN 1809.

TWO REGISTERS TWO YEARS APART NAME THIS COUPLE AND THEY WERE FOUND SEPARATELY. This act gives him a wife, Maria Carbone. The 1811 register, read the same afternoon, buries ANTONIA CRISCI of strada Camellara and lists her surviving children: «l'altra chiamata MARIA, di anni quarantadue, maritata col detto PASQUALE CARFORA».

Maria Carbone was forty-two in October 1811, so born about 1769 — and she is Antonia Crisci's daughter. Neither act was found by looking for the other; both were in the half of their volume this archive had never opened. [[harvesting-is-not-holding]]

THIS ARCHIVE ALREADY HELD A PASQUALE CARFORA, DEAD BY 1827. Married by 1809 to a woman born in 1769, he would be of the right age. Probable; no act yet joins the two by more than name and period.”

This parish repeats its names relentlessly — there are three Maria Falco and four Pasquale. These are different people, kept apart on purpose rather than merged into one.
