What the registers say

  • birth — 15 Mar 1821 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“A SECOND ROSARIA, BORN TWO YEARS TO THE DAY AFTER THE FIRST ONE DIED. Witnessed by GENNARO RIVETTI, twenty-one, of strada Monticello de' Cappuccini, and AGOSTINO CIOFFI, forty-eight, of strada Camellara.

The first Rosaria died on 15 MARCH 1819. This one is born on 15 March 1821 — the same day of the same month, two years later. The coincidence is recorded and not explained. This household reuses a dead child's name as a matter of course, and so does its neighbour: two Raffaele, two Pasquale, two Antonia, two Maddalena, two Giovanni are already on this site.

WORK-LIST ROW 42 IS NOT ANSWERED BY THIS. That row asks where the FIRST Rosaria's birth act is, and it is still in none of the registers for 1816–1819. What this act does is make the second Rosaria a documented person and confirm that the first was a distinct child.”

This parish repeats its names relentlessly — there are three Maria Falco and four Pasquale. These are different people, kept apart on purpose rather than merged into one.
