The Audit

Twice in one week a search that had been closed turned out to be open. So each negative was re-read — not to repeat it, but to ask what set its window. Seven of twelve had already failed.

Why this page exists

A negative in this archive is not a shrug. It is a claim: the record is not in these volumes. Each one here was read properly — complete alphabetical sections, bounded above and below, written up with what was in them.

And seven of the twelve were wrong anyway. Not because the reading failed, but because the window was set by something soft — a declared age, or an assumption about which child came first — and the search then honoured that window exactly.

Seven that failed

Where the window came from, and how far out it was

What was soughtWindowSet by Out byWhat happened
Giovanni Arena's birth 1857–1860 A DECLARED AGE — thirty-three in his son's act of October 1892 4 years The age was three years out. He was born 30 APRIL 1854, found only when his marriage act of 1885 gave a different age. Four complete years, four honest negatives, and the answer four years outside them.
Michele Donato's birth 1851, 1856, 1859 A TREE DATE (1851) AND A DECLARED AGE (thirty-six in 1892) 1 year Born 3 OCTOBER 1855 — one volume to the left of a year that had been read. Three complete D sections, three honest negatives, and nobody read 1855.
Francesco Antonio Arena × Serafina Arlotta's marriage 1858–1859 AN ASSUMED ELDEST CHILD — Giuseppe, born 1860 7–9 years They married 7 FEBRUARY 1851. The assumption failed because Filippo (1852), DOMENICA (1853 -- a daughter, not the «Domenico» this archive long carried) and Giovanni (1854) were all born before the child taken to be the first.
Rocco Arena × Generosa Costa's marriage 1885–1894 A CENSUS DURATION — «married ten years» in June 1900 the one unread year They married in DECEMBER 1888. The index of that single year is water-damaged across the A entries, and the act was found only through the separate banns volume.
Serafina Arlotta's birth 1833 A DECLARED AGE — twenty-eight in act 228 of 1861 3 years Born 13 JUNE 1830. The age was three years out, in the same direction as her son's.
Filippo Arena × Domenica Costa's marriage 1818–1819, later 1816–1819 AN ASSUMED ELDEST CHILD — Francesco Antonio, born November 1819 — AND A WRONG START YEAR, the belief that Scilla's registers begin in 1816 one to four years, and a whole fondo THEY MARRIED AT SCILLA ON 12 NOVEMBER 1815, Matrimoni atto 29. Every negative reported here was correct -- 1816 and 1817 act by act, 1818 through its Tavola, 1819 through its A section -- and the conclusion drawn from them, that the marriage was pre-civil and the Arena line stopped, was not. SCILLA'S REGISTERS BEGIN IN 1809. This is the only failure on this page where the window was set not by a soft figure but by a fact nobody checked, and it is the one that hardened into a published WALL. The act names Filippo's parents and Domenica's, and the marriage file behind it reached two generations further.
Camillo Antonio Polistena's birth 1830–1845, sixteen years A DECLARED AGE — thirty-six at his marriage in January 1881 four entries HE WAS BORN 21 SEPTEMBER 1844 AND THE 1844 INDEX HAD BEEN READ. The P block was read down to entry 138 and a negative recorded; he is at entry 142. Nothing about the window was wrong and nothing about the year was wrong -- the READING stopped four lines short of the section's end. A PARTIAL READING RECORDED AS A NEGATIVE IS THE SAME ERROR AS A 403 RECORDED AS A NIL, and it is the only entry here that cost sixteen years of sweeping to something already on the page.

The rule that falls out of it

Every failed window was derived from one of two things, and both are soft:

A declared age. Giovanni Arena's was three years out. Serafina Arlotta's was three years out. Michele Donato's tree date was four years out. In this archive ages are wrong by one to four years as a matter of routine, in either direction.

An assumed eldest child. Francesco Antonio Arena's marriage was hunted in 1858–59 because his "first" son was born in 1860. He married in 1851, and three elder children were simply unfound at the time.

So: a window derived from a declared age or an assumed first child must be widened by at least five years in both directions before a negative inside it means anything. Four consecutive years were read for Giovanni Arena and the answer sat four years outside them. Three were read for Michele Donato and the answer sat one year outside them. A tested negative is worth more than an untested positive — but only if what was tested was the right window.

Five that still stand

And are the same shape

What is soughtWindowSet byWhy it is fragile
Rocco Arena «di Orazio» 1856 A PARENTAGE THE TREE ASSERTS One year, and the parentage it tested has since been overturned by Rocco's own marriage act. The negative is sound but it no longer tests anything.
Giovanni Arlotta × Maria Costa's marriage 1829 AN ASSUMED ELDEST CHILD — Serafina, born June 1830 The weakest negative in the archive. And it is now known that Giovanni Arlotta was born about 1779, so a marriage in the civil window 1816–29 would make him 37–50: likely a SECOND marriage, with the first pre-civil and parish-only.
Giuseppi Polistena's birth 1875 A DECLARED AGE One year. The P section holds two Polistena and neither is his.
Maria Nicotra's birth at Piedimonte Etneo 1875, later 1870–1883 A TREE YEAR, and an age at death — eighty-eight in 1963 The one Maria Nicotra born at Piedimonte in 1875 is eliminated on her own marginal annotation, which marries her at Piedimonte in 1891 and keeps her there. THE WINDOW WAS THEN WIDENED RATHER THAN TRUSTED -- ten years, then fourteen -- and she is in none of them, though the Nicotra are in the town throughout. THE SHAPE THIS PAGE WARNS ABOUT IS PRESENT ANYWAY: the window rests on a tree year and an age at death, and the birthplace itself rests on nothing but her husband's town. Her own alien registration file at Brisbane states where she was born, and it has not been opened.
A Mazza join at Piedimonte before 1809 the riveli of 1747–1748 THE REGISTER INDEX — eighty households, read entire There is no MAZZA in the 1747 household census; there are two MAZZEO. The negative is complete for that volume and it is fragile for the ordinary reason: a rivelo is a TAX RETURN, and a household can be absent from one without being absent from the town. It is worth something only because the rest of the town is so recognisable -- Pagano, Currenti, Grasso, Musumeci, Vasta, Torrisi, Moschella -- the same names filling the registers a century and a half later.

The weakest is Giovanni Arlotta × Maria Costa — a single year, 1829, excluded on the assumption that Serafina was their first child. He was born about 1779. A marriage anywhere in the civil window would make him thirty-seven to fifty, which reads as a second marriage with the first pre-civil and parish-only. The negative is true and proves almost nothing.

What was also caught

And one of a different kind again, on 20 September: a negative that hardened into a published wall. Filippo Arena's marriage was hunted through 1816, 1817, 1818 and 1819. All four years were read properly and all four negatives were correct. The conclusion drawn from them — the marriage is pre-civil, the Arena line stops here — was written up as one of this archive's four established walls and stood on the site for five days. Scilla's registers begin in 1809. They married on 12 November 1815, and the act names his parents and hers. The wall has been removed. Every other window on this page was set by something soft; this one was set by a fact nobody checked, which is the worse failure, because a soft window invites doubt and a wrong fact ends it.

Two errors of a different kind turned up while this page was being written, and both are on the pages where they belong.

An identification made on a name and a year. A FindMyPast record — Clementina Arena, Ellis Island, 1921 — had sat in this archive for months and had never been opened. The line above hers on the same manifest names a father and a residence four hundred kilometres away. See The Crossings.

A year that looked read but wasn't. Two arks in this archive's own list of Scilla marriage volumes lead to notificazioni books rather than the marriage acts. The list does not distinguish volume types, so a year can be marked read when the wrong book was opened. See Scilla.
