…Since the Transvaal references were first pulled out of NAAIRS, this archive has carried a row saying TAB MHG O/2899 — Jan Gerhardus Lodewikus Booyzen — 1885 , and attached it to the seventh child on the 1863 death notice: Jan Gerhardus Lodewicus Booysen, born 4 December 1855 . His entry on the people index read "he died in the Transvaal at about thirty." He did not. That sentence had no source except the estate reference itself. The archive read the year off the file number, wrote it into his life as a death date, and then quoted the death date back as if it were evidence.…

THIS ARCHIVE HAD HIM DYING IN 1885 AND HAS TAKEN IT BACK: estate TAB MHG O/2899 belongs to his uncle of the same name, born 1818, and the death date was never anything but the estate’s year read backwards onto the wrong man.
