  “A CHILD OF THIS HOUSEHOLD THIS ARCHIVE DID NOT HAVE, AND THE LAST FALCO ACT ANTENATI CAN REACH. Arienzo, Matrimoni 1865, act 3, image 5 right — the first Falco found in the Arienzo marriage registers of 1861–1865, which had never been read:
  
  «ATTO DI SOLENNE PROMESSA DI MATRIMONIO — Num. d'ord. 3. L'anno mille ottocento sessantacinque, il dì ventitre di Gennajo, alle ore quindici, avanti di Noi RAFFAELE VIVOTTI Sindaco ed uffiziale dello Stato Civile di Arienzo, distretto di Caserta … sono comparsi nella Casa Comunale VINCENZO ABATIELLO, di anni quaranta, nato in Liveri, di professione contadino, domiciliato ivi, figlio del fu ANTONIO, di professione simile, e di fu ALESSANDRA ALVANESE — ed ANGELA FALCO, di anni ventotto, nata in Arienzo, domiciliata in Arienzo, figlia di MATTEO FALCO, di professione contadino, domiciliato ivi, e di ALESSANDRA CRISCI, domiciliata ivi».
  
  TWENTY-EIGHT IN JANUARY 1865 PUTS HER BIRTH ABOUT 1837 — between this couple's marriage in January 1834 and their daughter Domenica of September 1846. Her birth act has not been looked for; the Arienzo births of 1837 are read and this archive should go back to them with her name.
  
  THE ACT DOES TWO OTHER THINGS. It keeps both her parents alive on 23 January 1865, in a sentence that marks the groom's parents dead. And it spells her mother's surname, which the 1846 birth act left deliberately unread.
  
  She marries out of the town. Vincenzo Abatiello is forty, a contadino of LIVERI, in the Nola plain — twelve years her senior and an orphan of both parents.”
