What the registers say
- birth — 9 Mar 1826 , Arienzo, strada Sant'Andrea “THE BIRTH OF A CHILD THIS ARCHIVE ONLY HAD A DEATH FOR. Presented by the midwife, so both parents are named; witnesses VINCENZO OROLOGIO, twenty-eight, pettinatore and GIUSEPPE CIMMINO, thirty-five, viaticale, both of strada Sant'Andrea.
IT DATES AN ACT THE ARCHIVE ALREADY HELD. On 1 May 1827 GIUSEPPE FALCO declared, as «vicino del defunto», the death of a GIUSEPPE CIOFFI, aged one, son of FRANCESCO CIOFFI. Born 9 March 1826, he was one year and seven weeks old. The join is exact and the child now has both ends of his life.
AND THE STREET IS NEW. This household is on strada CAMELLARA in 1822, 1831 and 1833. In March 1826 it is on strada SANT'ANDREA — so either they moved twice, or the clerks recorded the quarter rather than the lane. It is recorded, not explained.
HE IS THE SECOND OF THREE GIUSEPPE, AND FINDING HIM RENUMBERED THE OTHER TWO. The first died 25 March 1824 aged five, so he was born about 1819. This one was born 9 March 1826 and died 1 May 1827 at one year old — his death act names MARIA FALCO and is now held under this household. A third was born 5 October 1829 (act 74) and is probably the Giuseppe Cioffi dead 5 December 1830 at fourteen months; this archive had been calling him «the second» and he is the third. On /corrections.
This household buried at least six children that this archive knows of, and named the next one after each: three Giuseppe, two Antonia, two Mariantonia.”ANTENATI an_ua14423 (Arienzo, Nati 1826) atto 19, img 20r-21l — READ FROM THE IMAGE - death — 1 May 1827 , Arienzo, strada Camellara “DEAD AT ONE YEAR OLD, AND THE ACT NAMES BOTH HIS PARENTS.
THE MOTHER'S NAME IS WHAT MAKES THE JOIN. This archive held the act only under Giuseppe Falco, who declared it as a neighbour; the household of the dead child never carried it. Read from the image on 21 September 2026, it gives MARIA FALCO outright, and the child is the one born 9 March 1826, act 19 — one year and seven weeks old, exactly as the act says.
And the clerk draws the distinction himself, in one sentence: Giuseppe Falco is «vicino del defunto» and CESARE CIOFFI is «parente del defunto» — kin to this household, as he is again in 1828 for another of its children. The act is dated 2 May; this archive had been citing it as 1 May, which is the day of the death, not of the act.”ANTENATI an_ua14329 (Arienzo, Morti 1827) atto 30, img 17l — READ FROM THE IMAGE
