What the registers say

  • named in a birth act — 1817 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“«e da SARA RUGGIERO sua moglie legittima D'ANNI QUARANTACINQUE» — FORTY-FIVE IN 1817, so b. c.1772, and STILL BEARING CHILDREN AT FORTY-FIVE. Her daughter Andreana was baptised 30 November 1796, when she was about twenty-four. This is the first age this archive has ever had for her; two days ago she was a bracketed «[Rosae]» in a machine transcript”

  • death window — between 1817 and 1 Jun 1820 , Arienzo
“A THREE-YEAR DEATH WINDOW, WHERE THIS ARCHIVE HAD NONE. She bore a son in 1817, aged forty-five, and by her daughter's wedding on 1 June 1820 she is «q[uonda]m Sara Ruggiero» — dead. So she died between 1817 and June 1820, aged about forty-five to forty-eight. Her son-in-law's 1846 marriage act calls her «quondam» again, which corroborates without narrowing.”

  • named as LEVATRICE — 27 Feb 1816 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“SHE WAS A MIDWIFE, AND THAT EXPLAINS THE TEN PARISH PAGES.

THE IDENTIFICATION, AND WHAT IT RESTS ON. This archive already holds a SARA RUGGIERO, forty-five, of strada CAMELLARA, from the 1817 birth register, where she is «sua moglie legittima» of ARCANGELO CRISCI and bearing a son at forty-five. Forty-five in February 1816 and forty-five in 1817, on the same street, under the same name. The two are the same woman, and the repeated age is this office's ordinary habit rather than a difficulty. No document says so in one sentence, and this is set down as an identification, not a quotation.

WHY IT MATTERS MORE THAN A TRADE. This archive has long recorded that «Matrina fuit SARA RUGGIERO» appears on ten pages of the Arienzo parish baptism harvest, standing godmother to children of at least six Falco households — Pasquale Falco & Chiara Rivetti, Giuseppe Falco & Gelsomina Vigliotta, Gioacchino Falco & Vittoria Cimmino, Domenico Crisci & Margarita Falco, Antonio Morgillo & Rosa Falco, and her own daughter's house. It had no explanation for that reach. A LEVATRICE STANDS GODMOTHER TO THE CHILDREN SHE DELIVERS. Her presence across six unrelated Falco households is her occupation, not a kinship — which removes an inference this archive had been careful never to draw and now need not.

And she practised on the Falco's own street. Strada Camellara is where Vincenzo Falco, Giuseppe Falco and Michelangelo Falco all lived. Her successors in this register are ROSA DELLA SELVA, fifty-eight here and seventy-nine in 1830, and CATERINA RUGGIERO — whose surname is hers, and about whom nothing is claimed.

Found by reading the 1816 birth register at the combined band for work-list row 86.”
