George Augustus Kolbe the 1820 Settler died at Colesberg in 1844 and is buried at Burgersdorp; his son Frederik Fortunatus baptised eight children at Colesberg, Hopetown and Bethulie between 1863 and 1881; and THREE OF THOSE EIGHT marry or are found at Wakkerstroom in the eastern Transvaal. The eldest, another George Augustus, was born at Colesberg on 29 July 1863 and died here on 28 September 1954, aged ninety-one — a man whose life spans the whole of this archive's South African century. TWO MEN NAMED GEORGE AUGUSTUS KOLBE LIVED AND ARE BURIED HERE, born two years apart — 2 October 1861 and 29 July 1863 — and the older of them was the prisoner of war of 1902. Two of his sons died here in 1918 four months apart, which is the influenza, and one of them carried the London surname DOWNING into the eastern Transvaal, which is what proved the connection. A woman named ANGELINE KOLBE died here on 15 November 1900, aged 28, and this archive cannot say who she was.
