Don Luis Eugenio LERENA LENGUAS
DOCUMENTED, 13 September 2026. "Natural de esta Republica", married Dona Julia Juanico at San Francisco de Asis, Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo, on 19 December 1864 - act 258, image read - which names him "hijo legitimo de Don Luis y de Dona Justiniana Lenguas". His daughter Laura Adela's baptism of 1869 names the same two as her paternal grandparents, independently. So his parentage is PRIMARY, not the tree assertion it was that morning; and it makes him a brother of GILBERTO JUSTINIANO LERENA LENGUAS, co-founder of the Argentine Stud Book - though THAT brotherhood still rests on published genealogy rather than an act, and is marked secondary on the chart. Five children, all on primary records. Died before 11 July 1910, when his widow's death was registered. NO LINK TO JUAN CARLOS LERENA HAS BEEN SHOWN. HIS DEATH IS FOUND: 24 DECEMBER 1901, at seven in the morning, at the house calle Suarez No. 25 in el Paso del Molino, Montevideo. Act 216. "De nacionalidad oriental, nacido en Montevideo, de cincuenta y seis [anos], de estado casado, y de profesion HACENDADO" - a landowner, which is the first statement of this family's standing anywhere in the archive. He died of pulmonary tuberculosis, certified by Dr Scremini. IT WAS HIDING UNDER A MISSPELLING: FamilySearch indexes him as Luis SERENA Lenguas, so every search under LERENA missed him, including a 1,502-row sweep of Montevideo Lerena deaths run the same morning. He was found by searching for his MOTHER. The act also says his father Luis Lerena was already dead, and that his mother Justiniana Lenguas was ALIVE AT 79 and staying in the same house. HIS OWN BAPTISM IS NOW READ: born 9 FEBRUARY 1843, baptised 7 January 1846 at the Capilla de la Mauricia, Villa de la Union. "Hijo legitimo de Luis Lerena y Justiniana Lenguas, ORIENTALES. Paternos: Francisco y Maria Fernandez. Maternos: Pedro y Carmen Gonzalez." Godparents Juan Lenguas and Maria Fernandez. His death act of 1901 gave his age as 56, implying 1845; the act of his own baptism is the better evidence. A THIRD INDEPENDENT RECORD OF THAT DEATH, 14 September 2026: the Montevideo cemetery office's own return, "Relacion de los individuos que han fallecido en el mes de Diciembre de 1901", lists him against day 24 between Lucrecia Sosa and Emilia Zanola de Sanchez. So he was BURIED AT MONTEVIDEO, and the date now rests on three documents - the civil act, the cemetery roll, and his widow's sworn statement of 1908. Found only by searching the COMPOUND surname. A CONTRADICTION INSIDE THE REGISTER ITSELF, recorded 14 September 2026 and NOT resolved. Luis Eugenio's act says he was born 9 FEBRUARY 1843; his sister Justiniana Mauricia Maxima's act, the entry immediately before his on the same page in the same hand, says she was born 30 JULY 1843. That is FIVE AND A HALF MONTHS between two full siblings, and both cannot be right. Neither is a machine reading: the transcript of each act has been read verbatim, and both say "del pasado ano cuarenta y tres". THE ERROR IS IN THE SOURCE, NOT IN THIS ARCHIVE. Every act on that page is a LATER TRANSCRIPT copied out of a legajo by order of Bishop Jacinto Vera - a clerk working from loose papers three years after the events, who had already written "ano cuarenta y tres" twice on the same page. A carried-forward year is the likeliest explanation and it is a guess. Luis Eugenio's death registration of 1901 gives an age and has been read; testing it against 1843 is the next step. AND THE CONTRADICTION IS RESOLVED THE SAME AFTERNOON - AGAINST HIS OWN BAPTISM ACT. Three facts, two of them already in this archive: (1) his baptism act says he was born 9 February of "el pasado ano cuarenta y tres"; (2) his sister Justiniana Mauricia's act, THE ENTRY IMMEDIATELY ABOVE HIS IN THE SAME HAND, says she was born 30 July 1843 - five and a half months before him, which is impossible; (3) his civil death registration of 24 December 1901 gives his age as FIFTY-SIX, which puts his birth at about 1845. Two independent constraints point to 1845 and only one points to 1843 - and the one is a clerk copying loose papers three years after the fact, who wrote "ano cuarenta y tres" in the entry above this one and again in the entry below. A YEAR CARRIED FORWARD DOWN A COLUMN IS THE ORDINARY WAY THIS ERROR HAPPENS, and it is the only reading under which his sister's date, his own death record and his baptism can all stand. SO THIS ROW NOW CARRIES 9 FEBRUARY 1845. The day and month are secure and are not in question; only the year moved. The act's own words are kept above and in data/1846-la-mauricia-page.tsv, because the source says 1843 and a reader is entitled to see that this archive overruled it and why. THIS IS AN INFERENCE, NOT A DOCUMENT - an age at death is the weakest date in genealogy and this archive has said so in print; it is load-bearing here only because it agrees with a constraint reached independently of it.
