Juan Agustin LERENA Fernandez

THE ELDEST, AND HE MATTERS FOR A SECOND REASON. ONE OF SANCHO'S SIX CHILDREN LISTED IN THE 1812 PADRON, and the first time any of them has been entered here. The household at calle San Juan No 60 held Sancho "andaluz" 45, Maria Fernandez 36, and six children all "naturales del CANELON" - Juan Agustin 21, Pedro Antonio 19, Agustina 17, Fidel 12, Justa 10 and Dominga 7 - together with Sancho's father-in-law RODRIGO FERNANDEZ, 63, asturiano, and four enslaved people. That all six were born at Canelones is the best support the 1791 marriage venue has, and it comes from a census rather than from a tree. NOT AN ACT: this row rests on a published transcription of a census, reported at second hand through a family tree. The act has not been opened here. THE 1812 PADRON GIVES HIM AS 21, so born about 1791 - the year of his parents' marriage. AND HE RESOLVES A MISREADING THIS ARCHIVE MADE AGAINST ITSELF. At the Montevideo baptism of 15 May 1812 the godparents are written "DON JUAN AGUSTIN SERENA y DONA AGUSTINA PERENA". This archive argued that "Juan Agustin cannot be Sancho's son, who would be a child in 1812" and talked itself out of the reading. He was twenty-one, and his sister Agustina was seventeen. The two names at that font are his and hers, and the child baptised was very likely their first cousin. So SERENA and PERENA are the machine's S-for-L again - the sixth time on this family. The tree gives his birth as 1792; the padron implies 1791. Both are kept.
