JUANA (enslaved in Sancho Llerena's household)
A WOMAN THIS FAMILY HELD IN SLAVERY, NAMED HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME. The padron of 1812 records four enslaved people in Sancho Llerena's household and gives none of them a name. The baptism of her daughter, six weeks later in the same year, names her: JUANA. Nothing else is known about her - no age, no origin, no surname, no later record. This row exists so that the archive carries her name rather than a number. See also her daughter MARIA MERCEDES. READ OFF THE PLATE 21 September 2026, where this row had rested on a MACHINE TRANSCRIPT. Film 007713375 image 02628, folio 136, Montevideo Catedral - the baptism of 26 September 1812. HER NAME SURVIVES THE CHECK, and that is the whole reason this plate was opened. The act reads 'que nacio antes de ayer, hija de JUANA, negra esclava de D.n SANCHO LERENA y de D.a MARIA FERNANDEZ'. A machine is worst at proper nouns, and this woman's name is the only thing any record gives her - so it was the one that most needed a human to read it. It is JUANA, in the priest's own hand. The act also states that she was held by BOTH Sancho and Maria Fernandez, jointly - which the transcript rendered the same way and which the padron of the same month confirms by putting her inside that household.

Named as the mother of a child baptised into slavery in Sancho Lerena's household: "En veinte y seis de Septiembre de mil ochocientos doce: Yo el infrascrito bautice solemnemente a MARIA MERCEDES, que nacio antes de ayer, NEGRA ESCLAVA DE DON SANCHO LERENA Y DE DONA MARIA FERNANDEZ, hija de JUANA. Madrina Catalina Martinez." The 1812 padron counted four enslaved people in that household at calle San Juan No 60 and named none of them. This act names her.

CORROBORATED BY A SECOND DOCUMENT OF THE SAME YEAR. The 1812 padron of Montevideo enters her inside Sancho Lerena's household at calle San Juan No 60, among four enslaved people named ANTONIO, JOSE, JUANA and TERESA - listed after the six children and before RODRIGO FERNANDEZ, the father-in-law, who closes the household. Until now she was known only from the baptism act of 26 September 1812, which calls her the mother of Maria Mercedes. Two independent records, the same household, the same year. A DIFFERENT JUANA, aged 41, heads house 59 on the same page and is not her.
