The Nicotra
Three days ago this line was two names on a Queensland death certificate. It now reaches generation six on both sides, crosses four comuni — and the man it is named for is still missing.
Where it started
Everything this archive knew about the Nicotra came from one Australian document: the 1963 Queensland death registration of Maria Nicotra , which names her parents as «John Nicotra» and «Venera Cassaneti». No dates, no places, no act — and one of those surnames does not exist in Italy. «Cassaneti» appears exactly once in the whole Queensland index, on that certificate, taken down from an informant at a Brisbane registry counter. The Sicilian form is CASSANITI, and a register searched for the other spelling returns nothing forever.
The line, as four acts give it
Read in the original, September 2026. Not one of these people is in the family's export with a date.
Rosario Nicotra × Venera Murabito
Of MASCALI, both living and working there in October 1872 — he a bracciante, she a contadina. Named without «fu» in an act that writes «fu» for a witness two lines above, so the absence is a statement. Neither has been found in any register of any of the four towns.
Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20
Gaetano Cassaniti × Maria Currenti
Of PIEDIMONTE ETNEO, and BOTH DEAD by October 1872 — «figlia del fu GAETANO, e di fu MARIA CURRENTI». Gaetano is also the father named in his daughter's birth entry of 1848, which is what ties the birth to the marriage.
Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20; Nati 1848 atto 45
Giovanni Nicotra × Venera Cassaniti
Married at Piedimonte Etneo on 7 OCTOBER 1872 at nine in the morning. He thirty-one, a bracciante, «domiciliato e residente a MASCALI» and «nato a GIARRE»; she twenty-four, born at Piedimonte in 1848. The family's export calls them «John Nicotra» and «Venera Cassaneti» and gives neither a date.
Piedimonte Etneo, Matrimoni 1872 atto 20 and Matrimoni allegati fascicolo 20
Maria Nicotra
Born at MASCALI on 8 DECEMBER 1875 at half past nine in the evening, in contrada Sopra Pietrafitta, and registered two days later by her father in person. Married Salvatore Mazza about 1900; widowed 1929; sailed to Sydney on 20 April 1962 at about eighty-six, to her sons; died at Brisbane in 1963 and lies at Nudgee.
Mascali, Nati 1875 atto 144
The join is not circular, which matters because «Giovanni Nicotra» is a common name. The family's own export — parsed long before any of this — gives Giovanni and Venera seven children, and one of them is a ROSARIO. A first son takes the paternal grandfather's name, and the paternal grandfather in the 1872 act is Rosario. This archive held the grandson's name for months and could not have derived the grandfather's from it.
What 50 read years have not found
Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito are named in one act and appear in no register.
| Comune | Series | Years read | What it said |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giarre | Matrimoni 1835–1844 | 7 | 3 year(s) hold an N entry; none of them is Rosario |
| Giarre | Nati 1820–1848 | 12 | 4 year(s) hold an N entry; none of them is Rosario |
| Mascali | Matrimoni 1835–1847 | 8 | 2 year(s) hold an N entry; none of them is Rosario |
| Riposto | Matrimoni 1835–1846 | 12 | 3 year(s) hold an N entry; none of them is Rosario |
| Riposto | Nati 1838–1848 | 11 | 4 year(s) hold an N entry; none of them is Rosario |
The instrument is not the problem. Every one of these Tavole is alphabetical and names both parents, so the household would announce itself. What is being tested is whether the man's own statements about himself are true — he is trentuno in 1872 and ventotto in 1875, six years apart in three — and whether «nato a Giarre» means the comune or the district.

The wrong Nicotra, and the right shape
Twelve years of Riposto's marriage Tavole were read for exactly the row that would end this: Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito, who would hand over generation seven in a single line. That row is not there. What is there is one N entry across the twelve years, and it is a different man.
He is the Salvadore Nicotra whose children the Riposto birth sweep had already turned up — Alfio in May 1845, Rosa in November 1847 — without knowing where he came from. Now it is written: born at Giarre, married at Riposto, children registered at Riposto.
This is not Giovanni's father and this archive does not pretend it is. What it settles is the question behind the search. «Nato a Giarre» and «absent from Giarre's registers» stopped being a contradiction the moment a second man did both. Whether Rosario is Salvadore's brother is the obvious next thought and has no evidence at all behind it — two men of a surname in one district are not kin until an act says so, and this archive has been wrong about exactly that before.
Eight Nicotra households, and not one of them his
Forty-five read index years turned these up. They are kept because a surname that is present and never right is a different fact from a surname that is absent — and because the next reader will otherwise find them again.
| Comune | Father | Mother | Seen | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Riposto | Giuseppe Nicotra | Angela Autieri | 1847, 1848 | Nicotra Rosa in November 1847 and Nicotra Leonardo on 26 December 1848 |
| Riposto | Salvadore Nicotra | Maria Barbagallo | 1844, 1845, 1847 | married Maria Barbagallo at Riposto in July 1844 (Matrimoni atto 39), and his own patria there is GIARRE. Children Alfio on 9 May 1845 and Rosa on 15 November 1847 |
| Riposto | Francesco Nicotra | — | 1838 | Nicotra Maria, entry 170; the mother's surname is not legible at band width |
| Giarre | Dr Don Alfio Nicotra | Donna Angela Ligresti, then Donna Antonina Consoli | 1838, 1844, 1846, 1848 | ONE MAN, TWO MARRIAGES, TWO COMUNI. Son of Nicotra D. Giuseppe and Caltabiano D. Gioachina. Married Angela Ligresti at RIPOSTO on 23 April 1838 (Matrimoni atto 15) and Antonina Consoli at GIARRE on 19 August 1844 (Matrimoni atto 54) — the two acts name the same two parents, which is what joins them. Children Salvatore in November 1846 and Salvatore again in January 1848. AND HIS OWN PATRIA IS WRITTEN DIFFERENTLY IN THE TWO REGISTERS: «S. Giovanni» at Riposto, «Giarre» at Giarre |
| Mascali | Alfio Nicotra | Carmela Sudieri | 1840, 1847 | Nicotra Venera, 11 May 1840, and Nicotra Maria, 23 July 1847 |
| Giarre | Alfio Nicotra | Rosa Pappalardo | 1844 | not seen in a register of their own — named as the GIARRE-born groom's parents in Riposto Matrimoni 1844 atto 39. The first ordinary, untitled Nicotra household this archive can put at Giarre |
| Giarre | Simone Nicotra | Marianna Dadone | 1820 | Nicotra Rosaria, atto 198, 13 April 1820 — in the first year Giarre registered anything |
| Giarre | Rosario Nicotra | Rosa Providenza | 1820 | Nicotra Carmela, atto 228, 1 May 1820. THE NAME IS RIGHT AND THE GENERATION IS NOT: Giovanni's father Rosario was a bracciante still working in 1872, and a man fathering a child in 1820 would be past seventy-five by then. A grandfather-generation namesake is exactly what Sicilian naming custom predicts, and custom is not a document |
| Giarre | Salvadore Nicotra | Rosa La Spina | 1838 | named as the parents of NICOTRA ALFIO, who married Venera Cesaro at Giarre on 9 January 1838 (Matrimoni atto 2). Set beside Riposto Matrimoni 1844 — Nicotra Salvadore, patria GIARRE, son of NICOTRA ALFIO and Rosa Pappalardo — the two acts give an ALTERNATING ALFIO/SALVADORE descent at Giarre across three generations, which is exactly what Sicilian naming custom produces. NOT JOINED: the two mothers are both a Rosa and neither surname matches, and custom is not a document |
None of these is a join and none is offered as one. Two of the fathers are called Alfio and a third is a Rosario, which is precisely the trap this archive has fallen into before — four undated Rosario Mazza were once fused on the name alone, and the rule since is that two people of a surname in one district are not kin until an act says so. One search that cannot work, written down so nobody plans it twice
The obvious move, when a man's birthplace is in doubt and his marriage bundle survives, is to open the bundle: a processetto carries both spouses' birth extracts and their dead parents' death acts, and would answer Giovanni Nicotra's birthplace in one image.
It cannot work here, and the reason is a change of régime. The Bourbon-era Matrimoni, processetti do carry those extracts, and this archive has mined them at Piedimonte and at Scilla. The Italian-era Matrimoni, allegati — which is what 1872 is — carry the publication certificate and little else: no birth extract, no death act. What they do carry, and the processetti do not, is the printed vivente / fu field that established Rosario Nicotra and Venera Murabito were both alive.
Fascicolo 20 of 1872 has been read, and it is already giving everything it has. A researcher reasoning from the processetti to the allegati will plan a search the volume cannot answer.
What would carry it further
Salvadore Nicotra's own birth act at Giarre. He married in 1844, so he was born about 1815–1824 — a decade earlier than anything read here. That act names Alfio Nicotra's age and trade, and would say whether this Giarre household is a labouring one or the Dottor Don line under another spelling.
And the rest of Giarre's marriage Tavole. Mascali's are now read whole for 1835–1841 and 1847, and Riposto's for 1835–1846 — twenty years of the one index that names both spouses, all four parents and the comune each came from, and Rosario is in none of them. Of Giarre's, only 1840 and 1844 have been read. The other nine years have their containers banked and are held up by nothing but a rate limiter.
