Riposto

The lower town, separate from Giarre since 1821 — and the only comune left that fits the man this archive cannot find.

Why this town, and not another

Giovanni Nicotra is the last unfound person on the Sicilian spine. His own marriage certificate says he was nato a Giarre; eleven Giarre birth years, read end to end in both the main run and the appendix, do not hold him. Mascali, where he was living in 1872, does not hold him either — nine years read there.

Riposto is the lower town, the port below Giarre, and it has registered separately since 1821 — through the whole window in which he was born. A man of the lower town could say Giarre and be entered here. That is a reading from general history and not from any document, and it is written down as such.

What makes it more than a guess is what the registers hold. Giarre's only Nicotra across eleven years is a Dottor Don with a Donna wife. Mascali's across nine is an Alfio. Riposto has three ordinary Nicotra households — the sort of family a bracciante belongs to.

And in September 2026 the reading stopped being an inference. Riposto's marriage Tavola for 1844 records Nicotra Salvadore, patria Giarre, marrying a Riposto woman — and his two children then appear in Riposto's own birth Tavole, in 1845 and 1847. A Nicotra who says Giarre and is registered here is no longer a theory about how people moved; it is a man with an act number.

The Nicotra of Riposto

FatherMotherSeenThe children
Giuseppe NicotraAngela Autieri 1847, 1848Nicotra Rosa in November 1847 and Nicotra Leonardo on 26 December 1848
Salvadore NicotraMaria Barbagallo 1844, 1845, 1847married Maria Barbagallo at Riposto in July 1844 (Matrimoni atto 39), and his own patria there is GIARRE. Children Alfio on 9 May 1845 and Rosa on 15 November 1847
Francesco Nicotra— 1838Nicotra Maria, entry 170; the mother's surname is not legible at band width

None of them is Rosario. Giovanni Nicotra's father is named in the 1872 act as Rosario, a bracciante of Mascali, with Venera Murabito — and no household of that name has been found in any of the three towns. Four Riposto years remain unread.

Every birth year read, and what it said

Riposto's Tavola is alphabetical and names both parents. Each N section was checked into the next letter before anything was written down. Eleven consecutive years, 1838 to 1848, are now read end to end.

YearN entriesWhat is there
1838 one NICOTRA MARIA — father FRANCESCO
1839 none M runs into O, then P — no N section
1840 none M runs straight into P
1841 none M runs into P and the last leaf is TORN — but the SECOND 1841 volume (17517 suppl. 2) carries its own untorn Tavola, and there M runs into O with NO N heading at all. The O it holds (Oliveri Francesco, atto 93) is what the torn leaf lost, so the two together cover the year
1842 none M runs straight into P
1843 none M runs into O, then P — no N section
1844 empty the N heading WRITTEN and left blank after 168 Lo Muro Lucia, and the facing page opens at O — Olivieri Giacomo, atto 6
1845 one NICOTRA ALFIO, atto 75, born 9 May 1845 — father SALVADORE, mother Maria Barbagallo: the same household as 1847
1846 empty the N heading written and left blank, and the O beneath it
1847 two Nicotra Rosa — GIUSEPPE / Autieri Angela · Nicotra Rosa — SALVADORE / Barbagallo Maria
1848 one NICOTRA LEONARDO — Giuseppe / Autieri Angela, 26 December

1841 was the one unfinished negative, and it is finished now. The first volume's alphabet runs M into P with its last leaf torn and the right page lost — and Giarre had already taught this archive that an appendix can sit past the end of the alphabet. There is a second 1841 volume (17517, suppl. 2), and it carries its own untorn Tavola: M runs into O with no N heading at all. The O it holds is exactly what the torn leaf lost. Two volumes for one year is not two witnesses — a duplicate is a copy — but the copy reaches the part the original cannot show.

And then the marriages, which were the better instrument

Twelve years, 1835 to 1846. The marriage Tavola names both spouses, all four parents, and the comune each spouse came from — so a single row can carry a whole generation.

YearN entriesWhat is there
1835 empty N and O written and blank after 11 Messina Rosario; the alphabet is complete and ends in «Fine». Row 8 of the same page is a MAZZA — atto 8, 14 July 1835, MAZZA SALVADORE of ACITREZZA, son of Mazza Mastro Sebastiano and Gaetana Chiarenza, × LIGRESTI GRAZIA of Riposto, daughter of Ligresti Mastro Giovanni and Caterina Garufi. Unjoined to this family and left that way
1836 one the one N entry is NASTASI Pasquale × Guarrera Agata, atto 26, 6 October 1836, whose own parents are written ANASTASI Michele and Venera Di Mauro — not a Nicotra. Two rows above, 31 Murabito D. Sebastiano of PIEDIMONTE × Ligresti D. Petronilla
1837 empty N and O written and blank between 40 Mangano Giuseppe and 7 Patanè Giovanni
1838 one NICOTRA D. ALFIO × Ligresti D. Angela, atto 15, 23 April 1838 — his patria S. GIOVANNI, hers Riposto; his parents fu D. Giuseppe and D. Gioachina Cattabiano. A Don, and not of this town
1839 empty the N heading written and left blank, and the O beneath it; P follows with Pistorio, Previtera and Patanè
1840 empty a complete alphabet ending in «Fine» — M, N, O all written and left blank, then 13 Pidoto Rosario under P
1841 empty E, F, H, L, N, O, Q all written and blank; the entries are Grasso 21, Messina 11, then Pennisi under P
1842 empty N and O written and blank after 8 Musumeci Giuseppe; P opens with 9 Pellegrino Nicolò
1843 empty the N heading written at the foot of the M page after 34 Messina Mariano, and the facing page opens at O — 4 Oliveri Francesco
1844 one NICOTRA SALVADORE, atto 39, July 1844 — «patria GIARRE», son of NICOTRA ALFIO and PAPPALARDO ROSA × Barbagallo Maria of Riposto, daughter of Rosario Barbagallo and Anna Campagna
1845 empty the N heading written and left blank between 1 Melita Filippo under M and the blank O
1846 empty N and O written and blank between 39 Musumeci Natale and 24 Patanè Antonino
Riposto, Matrimoni 1844, atto 39 — Nicotra Salvadore, patria Giarre
Riposto, Stato civile della restaurazione, Matrimoni 1844, the annual Tavola, atto 39 — Archivio di Stato di Catania (Antenati an_ua73136, image 96). Six columns: the spouses, the patria of each, all four parents, and the date. Nicotra Salvadore — Giarre — Nicotra Alfio / Pappalardo Rosa, marrying Barbagallo Maria — Riposto — Barbagallo Rosario / Campagna Anna, in July 1844. The day of the month is not legible in the index; the act itself would give it.

1844 is the one that pays. Atto 39 marries Nicotra Salvadore to Maria Barbagallo of Riposto — and the patria column gives his as GIARRE, with his parents named as Alfio Nicotra and Rosa Pappalardo. He is the father of the two Riposto children the birth sweep had already turned up, in 1845 and 1847. Here is a Nicotra born at Giarre, married at Riposto, and registering his children at Riposto — which is precisely the shape this archive had guessed at for Giovanni, and had no document for until now.

The restauration run stops at 1860 and the Italian one begins at 1866 — a five-year hole in the middle, 1861 to 1865, which is the unification gap this archive has met at other comuni. It matters here only if the answer turns out to lie in it.

What would end this

Twenty-three Riposto years are read and Rosario is in none of them. That is now a finding rather than a gap.

  • The Giarre marriages. Salvadore Nicotra was born at Giarre and married at Riposto. If Rosario is his brother — and nothing yet says he is — then Rosario's own marriage to Venera Murabito is most likely to sit in Giarre's or Mascali's marriage Tavole, neither of which has been swept.
  • Salvadore Nicotra's own birth act at Giarre. He married in 1844, so he was born about 1815–1824 — before every Giarre year this archive has read. That act would name Alfio Nicotra's age and trade, and would say whether this is a bracciante family or the Dottor Don one.
  • The deaths. Rosario and Venera were alive in October 1872 and no death has been sought for either, in any of the four towns.
