Frederick Fortunatus Werdmuller
THE FORTUNATUS NAME IN A FOURTH SURNAME. “PETITION OF FREDERICK FORTUNATUS WERDMULLER OF MALMESBURY”, Cape Supreme Court, 1907, twice in one year, both times in other men's insolvent estates; and an estate of his own in 1953. This archive has already followed FREDERIK FORTUNATUS from Kolbe (1839) to Barry (1863) to Booÿsen (1899); here it is again, on a Werdmuller — and Augusta Louisa Kolbe married a Werdmuller. 17 SEPTEMBER 2026 — HE IS SHOWN TO BE HER SON, AND THE SENTENCE ABOVE IS WITHDRAWN. The last 214 images of the Burgersdorp baptism register hold his font: FREDRIK FORTUNATUS STEENKAMP WERDMULLER, BORN 25 APRIL 1861, BAPTISED 19 MAY 1861 AT BURGERSDORP, FATHER COENRAAD JOHANNES OTTO WERDMULLER, MOTHER AUGUSTA LOUISA KOLBE — FamilySearch 1:1:6FW6-WXGS, image 673. THE SETTLER’S FOURTH DAUGHTER GAVE HER CHILD HER BROTHER’S NAME, which is how Frederik Fortunatus reached a fourth surname. AND IT DATES AUGUSTA LOUISA: she was bearing her husband’s children in 1861, thirteen years before he married again at Burgersdorp in 1874 — which bears directly on whether Charles Andrew was her son. THE ONE STEP NOT TAKEN: that the child of 1861 is the man of the 1907 petition and the 1953 estate. Both are Frederick Fortunatus Werdmuller at the Cape and the name is rare; the 1907 man is of MALMESBURY and the child was baptised at BURGERSDORP, and no document read here joins them.

No family is drawn here, because none is recorded. This archive holds Frederick Fortunatus Werdmuller as a name on a document — a witness at a font, a signature on a form, a person named in someone else's list — and has no record of who their parents, spouse or children were. That is a statement about the sources, not about the person. Every record naming them →

- 17 Sep 2026 — The Burgersdorp sweep of images 605–818 found five new people
Three. Johanna Catharina Mountjoy, born 28 January 1860, was already held in full — a daughter of George Mountjoy who married William Henry Keys — and the sweep only confirmed her and gave her a reference. Frederick Fortunatus Werdmuller was already held from a 1907 petition and a 1953 estate; what the sweep added was his birth and his mother, which is a real gain and not a new person. THE DUPLICATE PERSON RECORDS WERE CAUGHT BY THE BUILD'S OWN NAME-COLLISION CHECK for the first and by reading the register for the second, before either reached a page. The rule it costs: a sweep that returns a name is checked against the archive before it is called a find. Where it stands →

…Whether his father is the Settler’s twin son — the G.A. Kolbe born 23 February 1836, who would have been twenty-five — is the next step and is not taken here. What is documented is a couple and three children. A sentence withdrawn, which is the better kind of find This archive already held a Frederick Fortunatus Werdmuller — from a Cape Supreme Court petition of 1907 and an estate of 1953 — with no birth, no parents, and a line saying “NOT SHOWN TO BE HER DESCENDANT” of Augusta Louisa Kolbe. A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
