George Mountjoy of Kokstad

THE HEAD OF THE OTHER MOUNTJOY FAMILY, THE ONE THIS ARCHIVE HAS TWICE SAID IS NOT ITS OWN. His death notice, signed at Bizana on 25 May 1943 by a son who was not present at the death, gives him as RETIRED, of KOKSTAD, EAST GRIQUALAND, born in the ORANGE FREE STATE, a Union national, eighty-one years old, married IN COMMUNITY OF PROPERTY to MARY MOUNTJOY, BORN FISCHER, the marriage in the KING WILLIAMSTOWN DISTRICT. He left movables, immovables, an estate over £300 and a will. NINE CHILDREN, NAMED: Minnie Burger born Mountjoy; Maria Kirsten born Mountjoy; George Mountjoy; Christian Mountjoy; Emily Lloyd born Mountjoy; Joseph Mountjoy; Alfred Mountjoy; Nellie Bouwer born Mountjoy; Lettie van der Sandt born Mountjoy. THEY ARE NAMED HERE AND NOT MADE INTO PEOPLE, because nothing yet joins this house to this archive’s and a family chart is not a place to park a maybe. AND QUESTION THREE FAILS AGAIN: Father — “Names unknown”. Mother — “Names unknown: deceased”. So the one line that could have connected or disconnected him from the Cradock saddler’s descendants is blank, exactly as it is blank on the saddler’s own notice a century earlier. THIS ARCHIVE'S EARLIER JUDGEMENT STANDS AND IS NOW BETTER EVIDENCED. The Transkei Mountjoys — Lusikisiki, Bizana, Mnyameni, Kokstad, Flagstaff, traders and labour agents — were recorded as “not this family so far as anything shows”. They are still that, but they are now a documented household rather than a scatter of index hits, and three of the ten estates this archive wanted belong to it.

No family is drawn here, because none is recorded. This archive holds George Mountjoy of Kokstad as a name on a document — a witness at a font, a signature on a form, a person named in someone else's list — and has no record of who their parents, spouse or children were. That is a statement about the sources, not about the person. Every record naming them →

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
