John Kolbe the younger
THE FIRST OF THE TWELVE THIS ARCHIVE CAN PUT A HAND ON. The Free State criminal court, October 1868: a horse thief drove off three animals from the farm SPRINGFIELD, ward Upper Modder-river, district Bloemfontein — a black mare and foal belonging to “ANNA JACOBA VAN DER MERWE, WIDOW OF LATE J.G.E. KOLBE”, a blue schimmel mare and foal belonging to “JOHN KOLBE, JUN.”, and a chestnut riding horse belonging to a man named Jephts. SIX MONTHS AFTER HIS FATHER DIED HE IS HOLDING STOCK IN HIS OWN RIGHT BESIDE HIS MOTHER. He is named by initial and suffix only, and nothing else about him is known — but AN EIGHTH OF THE OBITUARY'S “EIGHT SONS” NOW HAS A DOCUMENT. In 1884 The Friend reported that the eldest son of “Mr. John KOLBE”, a boy of ten called LITTLE JANNIE, was struck dead by lightning on his father's farm five hours north of Bloemfontein; the Natal Witness index carries the same death and names the father GEORGE. Two papers, two fathers, and this archive will not choose.

No family is drawn here, because none is recorded. This archive holds John Kolbe the younger as a name on a document — a witness at a font, a signature on a form, a person named in someone else's list — and has no record of who their parents, spouse or children were. That is a statement about the sources, not about the person. Every record naming them →

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
