Susan Elizabeth Mountjoy born Diesel

A MOUNTJOY BY MARRIAGE, WHICH IS WHY HER DEATH NOTICE COULD NEVER HAVE DONE WHAT IT WAS WANTED FOR. Death notice 989, Master’s Office Cape Town, stamped 12 April 1921: a housewife, married IN COMMUNITY OF PROPERTY to GEORGE MOUNTJOY JNR, dead at thirty-three at Mt Prospect, Flagstaff, leaving a joint estate of a TRADING STATION AND STOCK IN TRADE and no will. Four daughters, all minors, are named: IVY ELIZABETH, GWENDOLINE HAZEL, EDNA IRIS and DAPHNE JOYCE. They are named here and deliberately not made into people, having between them one forename apiece and no dates. HER OWN PARENTS ARE THE POINT, AND THEY ARE BARELY THERE. Question three is answered FATHER — “Diesel ?”, MOTHER — “Diesel ?”: her husband knew his wife’s maiden surname, wrote it twice, and marked both with a question mark. He did the same to her birthplace, “Maclear (?) District”. THE INDEX KEEPS THE WORD AND DROPS THE DOUBT. FamilySearch publishes her birthplace as Maclear, flat, with no question mark anywhere — so a reading the informant himself refused to vouch for arrives at the next researcher as a fact. AND HER CHILDREN ARE INDEXED AS IF THEY WERE DEAD. Ivy Elizabeth appears in the same collection as a Principal record, “Probate 1920, Grahamstown”, with no death date; she lived, and married a DU RANDT. The Cape probate index raises a record for every person named on a document, so a count of records is not a count of estates.

No family is drawn here, because none is recorded. This archive holds Susan Elizabeth Mountjoy born Diesel as a name on a document — a witness at a font, a signature on a form, a person named in someone else's list — and has no record of who their parents, spouse or children were. That is a statement about the sources, not about the person. Every record naming them →

…What the index says: aged 49, born about 1896 at MIDDELBURG, TRANSVAAL, died 12 December 1945, place as originally written FLAGSTAFF. FLAGSTAFF IS THE POINT. It is where Susan Elizabeth Mountjoy born Diesel died in 1920, at Mt Prospect, and it sits in the same Transkei country as Kokstad and Bizana. A third Mountjoy wife in that one district is the pattern, not a coincidence — but her husband is not named by the index and no image exists to name him. THIS IS THE ONE OF THE SIX THAT STILL NEEDS ORDERING FROM THE CAPE ARCHIVES. Catherine Louisa Johanna de Kock c.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
