William Barry
Found twice in one day. He came in on the 1915 death notice of his mother Margaretha Kolbe, estate 1291, which names NINE children where his father's names eight — and then the Burgersdorp doopregister produced his baptism: WILLIAM FREDRIK, born 23 August 1853, christened 23 October, godparents JOHN KOLBE, ANNA VAN DER MERWE and GEORGE KOLBE. Two of the three are his mother's brothers. A SECOND William Frederick Thomas was baptised in 1861 and this archive cannot say whether the first died or a clerk erred — a doubt re-surfaced, and briefly mistaken for a new find, when the index was asked for every Barry child of a Kolbe mother. He is not on his father's notice, not on the Cape Rebel roll, and nowhere else in this archive. His father's 1903 registration said ELEVEN children; with William there are nine named and two still missing.
