The Atlas
Every place this archive can put a person in, from the Bedfordshire and Limerick parishes at the top of the line to the Queensland suburbs at the bottom of it.
A marker is a place this archive can put a person in. Weight is not kinship — a parish may hold a great many of the surname and be connected to this family by nothing at all.
And a marker is not a promise. A gazetteer that has not heard of a place does not say so — it answers with the smallest thing it did recognise. So every pin here says which of four things it is. 61 were found at the point they are drawn on. 26 are approximate: a larger place, or a modern name, rather than the exact parish. 30 are standing on a containing place's coordinate and are marked as borrowed, naming what they borrowed from — Berkeley spent weeks on the pin for the word England, in Leicestershire, with six people on it. And 5 sit on a coordinate that several unrelated places were all sent to, which is therefore none of them. 10 places have no coordinate at all and are named rather than guessed at.
