What the registers say
- birth — 4 May 1827 , Arienzo, strada Camellara “AN EIGHTH CHILD, and the clearest necronym in this household. The 1827 tavola reads «52. Falco Maddalena | Falco Giuseppe, e Guida d'Antonia | A dì 4 Maggio 1827». THE FIRST MADDALENA DIED ON 31 MAY 1825, aged seven, on strada Camellara; this one was born TWENTY-THREE MONTHS LATER and given her name.
## THE ACT ITSELF IS NOW READ — AND ITS NUMBER IS 57, NOT 52 — 21 September 2026
Witnesses GENNARO LETTIERI, thirty-two, contadino, of strada COSTA, and RAFFAELE COSSI. Baptised at Sant'Andrea Apostolo the same day.
THE ACT NUMBER PUBLISHED HERE WAS WRONG BECAUSE IT CAME FROM THE INDEX. The tavola's numeral was read as 52; the act's own heading, in both columns, is «Num. d'ordine CINQUANTASETTE», and the acts either side of it on images 57 and 59 are 56 and 58. The index is not the act, and this archive has now been caught by that twice in one week.
Two things the act adds that the tavola could not. The birth is on strada CAMELLARA — this row carried no street at all — and GIUSEPPE FALCO is forty-five and a COLONO, which puts b. c.1782 against the forty he was given in January 1822, the same year of birth to within a month. His trade slides massaro → massaro di campagna → colono across this decade without the man changing.”ANTENATI an_ua14424 (Arienzo, Nati 1827) atto 57, img 58r-59l — READ FROM THE IMAGE (the tavola, img 150, is where it was first found) - marriage — 14 Feb 1860 , Arienzo “HER MARRIAGE — AND IT IS THE ACT THAT FINALLY DATES HER MOTHER'S DEATH. Arienzo, Matrimoni 1860, act 8:
«Num. d'ord. 8.
Thirty-three in February 1860 is a woman born in 1827, and her birth act is 4 May 1827. She is «the second» because an elder Maddalena, born 7 June 1818, died on 31 May 1825.
ONE WORD IN THIS ACT DOES WHAT TWO WORK-LIST ROWS HAVE BEEN TRYING TO DO FOR A WEEK. Her father is unmarked and her mother is «DEFUNTA» — see both of their rows below.”ANTENATI an_ua14264 img10r act8 — READ FROM THE IMAGE

This parish repeats its names relentlessly — there are three Maria Falco and four Pasquale. These are different people, kept apart on purpose rather than merged into one.
