What the registers say

  • death — 26 Feb 1811 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“THE EARLIEST RECORD OF THIS HOUSEHOLD BY FIVE YEARS, AND A CHILD IT DID NOT HAVE. Found on 22 September 2026 in the Arienzo death register for 1811 — one of the seven volumes of that decade this archive had never opened.

Ten days old, so born about 16 February 1811. This archive's earliest sighting of Giuseppe Falco and Antonia di Guida together was 1 December 1816; this is five years and nine months earlier, and it puts them on strada Camellara from the beginning.

AND IT GIVES GIUSEPPE FALCO A TRADE THIS ARCHIVE HAD NOT SEEN FOR HIM — massaro di campagna, a man who ran a farm, where the later acts call him colono and contadino. The word applies to the couple jointly in the clerk's sentence and is read as his.”

  • birth — 16 Feb 1811 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“HIS BIRTH ACT, AND IT AGREES WITH HIS DEATH ACT TO THE DAY.

Born at ten in the morning on 16 February 1811 and declared at three the same afternoon. The death register buries him on 26 February 1811 at «giorni DIECI» — ten days exactly. This archive has spent a year showing that these clerks guess; here two of them, in two volumes, agree perfectly. [[register-order-proves-dates]]

The act does not name him. The given name is entered further down the page, below the band this sweep read; RAFFAELE comes from his death act ten days later, which names both parents and the street.”

  • baptism — 16 Feb 1811 , Arienzo, strada Camellara
“HIS BAPTISM, AND THIS ARCHIVE HAD THE CIVIL ACTS WITHOUT IT. «Anno Dni 1811, die vero 16 Februarii, R[everen]dus Marsius d'Simeon d'Ambrosio Subdiaconus baptizavit infantem natum ex JOSEPHO FALCO, et ANTONIA DI GUIDA conjugibus hujus Parochiae, cui dedit nomen RAPHAEL. Matrina fuit SARA RUGGIERO. Hyacinthus Archip[resbyte]r Morgillo», with the margin «Raphael Falco. obiit die 26 Februarii 1811».

BORN, BAPTISED AND BURIED INSIDE ELEVEN DAYS. The civil birth act gives 16 February 1811 and the parish baptised him the same day; the civil death act gives 26 February. Three records, two authorities, and they agree exactly.

A MISREADING CAUGHT BY THAT AGREEMENT. The month was first read here as «Januarii», which would have baptised him a month before he was born. The conflict is what sent the word back for magnification, and it is Februarii. A contradiction between two sources is worth more than either source alone.

NEW: the godmother SARA RUGGIERO, and the subdeacon who baptised him. A Sara Ruggiero is already held here in another household; no connection is claimed.”
