Hermanus Pietersen
ANNA CATHARINA SLIER'S FIRST HUSBAND, AND UNTIL TODAY THIS ARCHIVE HAD HIM AND HIS SON AS ONE MAN. De Villiers, volume 3: “HERMANUS PIETERSEN, NAMEN VAN OUDERS ONBEKEND, gehuwd 5 APRIL 1807 met ANNA CATHARINA SLIER — (b) 1 Willem Hermanus, gedoopt 12 Maart 1809; 2 Johan Christiaan, gedoopt 28 April 1810.” The entry here used to read “Willem Hermanus Pieterzen, her first husband”, built from two documents that spell him differently — the 1817 marriage register's HARMANUS PIETERZE and the 1840 death notice's WILLIAM PIETERSEN — and two spellings looked like one long name. THEY ARE A FATHER AND A SON. His own parents were unknown to the book, as James Montjoy's would be to the clerk ten years later: TWO MEN IN ONE WOMAN'S LIFE AND NEITHER OF THEM HAD A RECORDED FATHER.

- 15 Sep 2026 — “WILLEM HERMANUS PIETERZEN — Anna Catharina Slier's FIRST husband”
HE IS THE SON. De Villiers's volume 3 gives “HERMANUS PIETERSEN, namen van ouders onbekend, gehuwd 5 April 1807 met ANNA CATHARINA SLIER”, and their children as “1 Willem Hermanus, gedoopt 12 Maart 1809; 2 Johan Christiaan, gedoopt 28 April 1810”. THIS ARCHIVE BUILT ONE MAN OUT OF TWO DOCUMENTS THAT SPELL HIM DIFFERENTLY — the 1817 marriage register's HARMANUS PIETERZE and the 1840 death notice's WILLIAM PIETERSEN — and a long name looked like a way to reconcile them. The husband is Hermanus; Willem Hermanus is the boy baptised in 1809. This archive half knew, because its own note already called the 1851 godfather “his son”. THE NAMING CLAIM SURVIVES AND IMPROVES: Willem Hermanus is Willem for his mother's father, Willem Slier of Hamburg, and Hermanus for his own father. A SECOND HALF-BROTHER, JOHAN CHRISTIAAN, WAS INVISIBLE FOR AS LONG AS THE TWO MEN WERE ONE. Where it stands →

…That was wrong, and it was corrected on 15 September 2026. Corrected from the printed genealogy De Villiers gives “Hermanus Pietersen, namen van ouders onbekend, gehuwd 5 April 1807 met Anna Catharina Slier” and their sons as Willem Hermanus (1809) and Johan Christiaan (1810) . The husband is Hermanus ; the 1851 godfather is his son , which this page already said in the line above without following it. The 1840 notice is the odd one out.…

Cape marriage entries of this date routinely record where a party came from, and this very page does it repeatedly — three couples in the right-hand column are entered "beide van Uitenhage" . Against James Montjoy's name there is a long ruled dash and nothing else .…

The Name
…Five spellings of one woman are a fact about handwriting. Two spellings of one surname are supposed to be a fact about history. The difference is that somebody in this family cared about the second one. And the same page gives the other half of the pattern. Her son was baptised Willem Hermanus Pietersen in 1809; the 1851 Graaff-Reinet register writes the surname Pieterzen , twice, in the hand that wrote Booyzen three lines above. The Pietersens changed nothing either. What the name means A patronymic Booysen is Dutch and means "son of Booy" . Booy is itself a short form of Boudewijn — the Dutch form of Baldwin , from Germanic bald ("bold") and win ("friend").…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
