William Frederick Thomas Barry

THE OTHER MISSING BARRY CHILD, AND HE IS INVISIBLE FOR THE OPPOSITE REASON TO HIS SISTER. She has no surname in the index; HE HAS THE SAME NAME AS HIS BROTHER. William Fredrik Barry was born 23 August 1853 and baptised at Burgersdorp; this William Frederick Thomas was born 29 SEPTEMBER 1861 and baptised at GRAAFF-REINET, eight years later, to the same parents — “Margaret Wilhelmina Kolbe + John Barry”. A SEARCH FOR WILLIAM BARRY RETURNS THE 1853 CHILD AND STOPS, and nothing in the result says there is a second. BY THIS FAMILY'S OWN PRACTICE THE FIRST WILLIAM MUST HAVE DIED — a baptism is not done twice, which is exactly what this archive concluded about the two Catherine Mary Sophias. The “WILLIAM who appears on nothing else” on his mother's death notice is one of these two and the notice does not say which. ark:/61903/1:1:623R-9MM9 and 1:1:62GJ-SD8Z.. THE ENTRY WAS READ AT THE PAGE ON 9 OCTOBER 2026 — film 008147497, item 4, Graaff-Reinet. Baptism Records 1861–1866, image 190, entry 79. “GEDOOPT 29 SEPT. 1861”: Willem Frederik Thomas, ouders JOHN BARRY and MARGARET WELHELMINA KOLBE. The date is his BAPTISM and the register gives him no birth date, where the entries either side of him both carry one. AND THE WITNESSES EXPLAIN THE PLACE. Get: PETRUS JACOBUS JOUBERT, CATHARINE MARIA SOPHIA KOLBE, RALPH PETER THOMAS, MARIA MAGDALENA PRETORIUS — the second is his mother's own sister, standing beside a Joubert as a married couple does. So this font is not evidence that the household moved back to Graaff-Reinet; it is evidence that a child was christened where its aunt was. AND THE THIRD WITNESS IS WHERE HIS THIRD NAME COMES FROM: Ralph Peter THOMAS, at the font of William Frederick THOMAS Barry

  • 13 Sep 2026 — A relationship search had turned up two Barry children on neither parent's death notice
It turned up one. WILLIAM FREDERICK THOMAS BARRY, baptised 29 September 1861, was already recorded on William Barry's own page — put there the day the Burgersdorp doopregister was read, with the doubt stated in the same sentence. The search re-surfaced him and this archive wrote him up as a find for about an hour. Only HENRY JAONAS BARRY is new. The section now says which is which, and the header no longer counts him. • 9 Oct 2026 — William Frederick Thomas Barry was born on 29 September 1861
THAT IS HIS BAPTISM DATE, AND THE REGISTER RECORDS NO BIRTH DATE FOR HIM AT ALL. Entry 79 of the Graaff-Reinet baptism register is headed “Gedoopt 29 Sept. 1861” — baptised. The entries on either side carry a birth date and his does not: 78 is geb. 24 April 1861, 80 is geb. 16 Aug. 1861, and 79 is a name with no geb. This archive took the one date on the entry and filed it as a birth, which is the commonest error there is in a baptism register and the easiest to make when an index labels its single date Event Date. What is actually known is that he was baptised on 29 September 1861 and born at some point before it. AND A SECOND THING GOES WITH IT: this archive reasoned from “born 29 September 1861 at Graaff-Reinet” that the household had returned to Graaff-Reinet between Burgersdorp and Dordrecht. The godparents are the mother's sister and her husband. A child is christened where its godparents are; a baptism place is where the font was, not where the family slept. Where it stands →

…It may not be a new child: this archive holds a James Henry Barry , born about 1847, who died at Barkly East on 23 June 1939. Jaonas is what a clerk writes when he is not sure, and James Henry and Henry Jonas are not the same man on paper. William Frederick Thomas Barry not new baptised 29 Sep 1861 This archive already had him, and the first version of this section said otherwise. He has been sitting on William Barry 's page since the day the Burgersdorp register was read — "a SECOND William Frederick Thomas was baptised in 1861 and this archive cannot say whether the first died or a clerk erred". The query re-surfaced him; it did not find him.…

A dossier is every mention of a person anywhere in this archive, gathered automatically after the site is built and linked back to the page it appears on. Identity here is by NAME, not by resolved individual — where two people share a name they share this page, and the archive says so rather than guessing. Nothing on a dossier page is new evidence; it is the same evidence, brought together.
