Josefa LERENA (godmother, 1885)

A LERENA WOMAN THIS ARCHIVE HAS NEVER MET, found 14 September 2026. She stood godmother to Gilberto Lerena's son Raul at the Catedral Basilica de Montevideo on 10 September 1885, with Alfredo Costa. A woman of the surname at the font of a Lerena child is very likely one of the siblings of that generation - Gilberto had at least five - or a first cousin. Nothing else in this archive names her, and she is worth chasing. NOT A CORRECTION - A CROSS-REFERENCE THIS ROW LACKED, written 20 September 2026. "Nothing else in this archive names her" is still true: no second record names this godmother. But two rows here hold candidates for her and this one sent the reader off to chase somebody already being chased. JOSEFA LERENA TRAIBEL (1851-1947), daughter of Avelino, whose row has called itself a strong candidate for this godmother since 14 September; and "Lerena de L[erena], JOSEFA, 43, viuda", line 4 of Gilberto's 1895 Buenos Aires household, which the household file calls "almost certainly" this woman. AND THE TWO CANDIDATES FIGHT EACH OTHER, which no row here has said. The 1895 enumerator writes wives as [maiden surname] "de L." - Lenguas de Lerena, Salvanach de Lerena - so line 4 is a woman born a Lerena who married a Lerena. But Josefa Lerena Traibel married a MORATORIO, on a parish act, and would have been written "Lerena de Moratorio". So either the "de L." reading is wrong, or the 1895 widow and the Traibel daughter are two different women - and at most one of the two can be this godmother. Three rows, one name, and no act joining any two of them.
