Mercedes LERENA (godmother, 1880)

ANOTHER LERENA WOMAN, found 14 September 2026 - very likely a SISTER OF JOSEFA and so another daughter of Avelino Lerena and Ambrosia Traibel. She stood godmother with Juan Arechaga to Maria de las Mercedes Moratorio Lerena at the Catedral Basilica de Montevideo on 8 March 1880 - and the child carries her name. Nothing else in this archive names her. 'NOTHING ELSE IN THIS ARCHIVE NAMES HER' IS NO LONGER TRUE, 21 September 2026. A sister of Josefa of exactly this name is now documented: MERCEDES MICAELA LERENA TRAIBEL, born 8 May 1863, christened at the Union on 25 September 1866, daughter of Avelino Lerena and Ambrosia Traibel. THE TWO ROWS ARE NOT MERGED, AND THE REASON IS AGE. This godmother stood at a font in March 1880, when Mercedes Micaela was sixteen. That is possible and not impossible, and the surname, the parish and the family are all right - the niece is even named for her. But a sixteen-year-old godmother is an inference, and the act that would settle it is the 1880 baptism itself, whose full-text transcript this archive has read without recovering the godmother's age or parentage. READ OFF THE PLATE 21 September 2026, where this row had rested on a MACHINE TRANSCRIPT. Film 007713378 image 02598, folios 411-412, Catedral Basilica de Montevideo - the two baptisms of 8 March 1880. Priest RAFAEL YEREGUI. THE TEST NAMED IN THIS ROW HAS NOW BEEN RUN, AND IT DOES NOT SETTLE ANYTHING. The row said the 1880 act 'would have to give her age or her parents' before she could be joined to Mercedes Micaela Lerena Traibel. The plate was read on 21 September 2026 and it gives NEITHER - only 'fueron padrinos JUAN [Arechaga] y MERCEDES LERENA, a quienes instruyo'. So the two rows stay apart, and the reason is now a read page rather than an unopened one. AND THE PARISH WAS WRONG, CORRECTED 21 September 2026 OFF THE PLATE. This archive placed these 1880 baptisms at the UNION, which is what the index's place field says. The act itself reads 'con licencia del infrascripto Cura Parroco DE ESTA BASILICA MENOR Y CATEDRAL DE MONTEVIDEO, bautice solemnemente EN ELLA a Maria Carlota'. They were baptised in the CATEDRAL BASILICA, not at the Union.
