S. Kruger: age 73, born in the Orange Free State, a BOER, a WEDUWNAAR, died 18 DECEMBER 1930 at Bloemspruit in the district of Bloemfontein, to be buried at Bloemfontein. Cause of death, in the doctor's English inside an Afrikaans form: valvular disease of the heart, bronchial asthma, nephritis and enlarged prostate, attended by Dr J. M. de Kock. NONE OF THE TWELVE WAS NAMED IN A DOCUMENT HERE UNTIL 27 SEPTEMBER 2026, when the Free State and Cape Dutch Reformed baptism registers were searched on HER name rather than on his. ELEVEN OF THE TWELVE ARE BELOW, and ten of them are named as this couple's by a baptism register or a civil death registration — not by a tree. THE TENTH CAME LAST AND IS THE FIRST IN ORDER: CATHARINA WILHELMINA, born 1844 in the Cape Colony, whose own 1909 death registration names this father and this mother and states that she had been married to a PIENAAR before the ANDERSON she died as — which is what turned a probable sixth child into the documented eldest. They are drawn in birth order, which is also the order the fonts move: Colesberg in 1846, Fauresmith in 1848 and 1849, then Bloemfontein from 1860, so the register records this household's move to the town without anybody writing it down. ONE IS STILL MISSING and the obituary is the authority for there being twelve. BOTH OF THE LAST TWO CAME OUT OF THE FREE STATE CIVIL DEATH REGISTERS ON ONE AFTERNOON, found by searching that index for their FATHER rather than for themselves — which is how a daughter filed under a married surname this archive had never heard of, and a son whose forenames run two of his brothers' together, were both reached.

    TRUE, AND THE REASONING UNDER IT WAS WRONG. This archive wrote on 20 September that the disagreement between Geni's 1857 and the FamilySearch tree's 1859 showed the two were not independent witnesses. The opposite turns out to be the case: each tree is following a different document. 1859 is his gravestone; 1857 is the age of 73 on his civil death registration. THE TREES WERE THE ONLY HONEST PARTIES IN THE ROOM — they disagreed because their sources disagree. AND GENI'S DATE IS A SPLICE: “22 October 1857” takes the day and month from the stone and the year from the death form, so it reproduces neither document while looking more precise than both. THE RULE THAT SURVIVES, SHARPENED: where trees differ, do not ask which tree is right — ask what each one is copying, because a compiled date can be a composite of two sources and match neither. AND THE FIRST DRAFT OF THIS ENTRY WAS FILED AGAINST THE WRONG MAN. Written with the bare name, it was attributed to Frederik Fortunatus Kolbe (1839–1929), the Settler's tenth child — a different man by twenty years, whose page would have carried a correction about somebody else's gravestone. The archive holds four men of this name and the tool prefers the longest, so the fix was to write the longer one.
