South Africa, Free State Dutch Reformed Church Records, 1848–1956: born 5 JULY 1849, baptised at FAURESMITH on 9 OCTOBER 1849, son of JAN GERSON ELIESE KOLBE and ANNA JACOBA VAN DER MERWE. THE SAME ENTRY IS INDEXED A SECOND TIME in the Cape Town Archives collection, as “Hendrik Kolbe”, with the identical two dates and the same two parents — one event, two indexings, which is agreement between transcribers and not between witnesses. SO HE IS THE COMMANDANT'S SON FROM A DOCUMENT, where this archive had him from a user tree since 20 September and would not adopt it. AND IT EXPLAINS THE FARM. HE FARMED THE COMMANDANT'S FARM, AND UNTIL THIS MORNING THAT WAS THE NEAREST THING TO AN ANSWER. He married ROSE MARIA McCABE at BLOEMFONTEIN on 4 JUNE 1872 — South Africa, Civil Marriage Records, FamilySearch 1:1:6ZHB-XQ1R — and the register image was read on 27 SEPTEMBER 2026. It enters him as 23, JONGELIEDEN, VEEBOER, living at LEEUWBERG (BLFN.); his bride's residence is written “Dito”, the same farm. LEEUWBERG IS WHERE COMMANDANT J.G.E. KOLBE DIED IN 1868, and where the register had placed the Commandant's widow eleven months earlier, at her own second marriage. A TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD KOLBE RUNNING STOCK ON THAT FARM IN 1872 is exactly what a son of that house would be doing, and his year of birth sits correctly among the children of a man who married in 1843. IT IS STILL NOT PROOF. A farm is not a father; brothers, nephews and hired kin all live on farms, and this archive has already been caught once this month reading a household as a parentage. THE FORM CANNOT SETTLE IT AND NEVER COULD — it has no parents' columns, which is a correction against this archive's own assumption rather than a disappointment. He signed himself J. H. Kolbe. THE SECOND WITNESS SIGNED G. A. KOLBE — a name this family carries in three generations, and one more reason to want VAB MHG M777, which would name all twelve children at once. He is the second of two Kolbes to marry a McCabe in ten months. AND ON 2 AUGUST 1869 HE AND HIS BROTHER TOOK CHURCH MEMBERSHIP AT BLOEMFONTEIN ON THE SAME DAY — “John Henry Kolbe” and “Willem Johannes Kolbe”, both entered that date in the Free State registers, which was Willem Johannes's twenty-second birthday and fifteen months after their father died. JOHN HENRY IS JAN HENDRIK ANGLICISED, and under that spelling the registers give him five children by Rose Maria McCabe: JOHN GERSON ELIEZER — the Commandant's name entire — Elizabeth Magdalena, Ada Francis, Anna Jacoba and Rosa Euphemia. A man names his eldest son after his own father, and this one did.

NONE OF THE TWELVE WAS NAMED IN A DOCUMENT HERE UNTIL 27 SEPTEMBER 2026, when the Free State and Cape Dutch Reformed baptism registers were searched on HER name rather than on his. ELEVEN OF THE TWELVE ARE BELOW, and ten of them are named as this couple's by a baptism register or a civil death registration — not by a tree. THE TENTH CAME LAST AND IS THE FIRST IN ORDER: CATHARINA WILHELMINA, born 1844 in the Cape Colony, whose own 1909 death registration names this father and this mother and states that she had been married to a PIENAAR before the ANDERSON she died as — which is what turned a probable sixth child into the documented eldest. They are drawn in birth order, which is also the order the fonts move: Colesberg in 1846, Fauresmith in 1848 and 1849, then Bloemfontein from 1860, so the register records this household's move to the town without anybody writing it down. ONE IS STILL MISSING and the obituary is the authority for there being twelve. BOTH OF THE LAST TWO CAME OUT OF THE FREE STATE CIVIL DEATH REGISTERS ON ONE AFTERNOON, found by searching that index for their FATHER rather than for themselves — which is how a daughter filed under a married surname this archive had never heard of, and a son whose forenames run two of his brothers' together, were both reached.

    SHE IS NOT A DAUGHTER. SHE IS THE WIDOW, UNDER HER FIRST HUSBAND'S SURNAME, and this archive briefly held one woman as two people. South Africa, Civil Marriage Records enters ANNA JACOBA KOLBE; the archive already held ANNA JACOBA VAN DER MERWE, widow of J. G. E. KOLBE, remarrying Francis McCabe “about April 1871” on a Geni profile. Same groom, same year, three months apart — and a widow is recorded under her married name, which this archive already knew, having noted that the Free State estate index files her under McCabe for the same reason. THE TELL WAS ARITHMETIC, NOT PALAEOGRAPHY: a man does not marry twice in three months, and the duplicate stood on the page for a day before anybody added the two dates together. WHAT SURVIVES AND IS BETTER THAN WHAT WAS LOST: the marriage now carries a documented date, 13 July 1871, in place of a family tree's about April. The duplicate person is withdrawn, the two timeline entries are merged, and the marriage register names the widow. WHAT WOULD PUT IT BEYOND DOUBT: a civil marriage entry records each party's condition, so the unread image says “widow” or it does not, and settles it in a word. The second McCabe marriage is untouched — Jan Hendrik Kolbe and Rose Maria McCabe, 4 June 1872, remains two young people and not a widow. 27 SEPTEMBER 2026 — THE IMAGE IS READ AND IT SAYS THE WORD. The register enters her “ANNA JACOBA KOLBE, GEB: VAN DER MERWE”, 46, WEDUWE, and him WEDUWNAAR. The withdrawal was right, and it is now held on the document instead of on the arithmetic that found it.
